Smile OIL Weight

So which oil weight should be used on the engine, esp. on the first oil change and so forth?

10W-30

Just brought my 2002 TLS to an independent garage that specializes in Acuras -- highly regarded in the SF Bay Area -- for my 30K service. Didn't notice until later that they had used 10W-30 oil.

Is this a problem? I know that 5W-20 is the spec.

TIA

Scott

Should I be putting synthetic or super synthetic on my first oil change. I heard once you use it you can go back to regular. Is that true?

5W-20 is the spec for '02s and newer. 5W-30 is used by many members without any ill effects. 10W-30 probably shouldn't be used, especially in the winter months. While one oil change period probably wouldn't hurt anything, I'd bring it back and make them change it to either 5W-20 or 5W-30.

I would take it back and have them drain and replace with the correct weight oil.

Mekatron in Concord. In general, pleased by the experience and the price. But the wrong oil is a concern. Perhaps it's just a typo on the order. I'll be calling them first thing Monday morning to discuss. Hopefully, they'll step up and correct the error.

UPDATE:

Ian Miller of Mekatron showed me the shop manual information provided by a service they use called "Alldata" (www.alldata.com). For the 2002 Acura TL, they had a graph similar to the one in the owner's manual, except it had a line above the 5W-20 line for 10W-30 oil. I showed Ian the owner's manual, which disputed Alldata's info.

To their credit, Mekatron noted the Acura information and graciously changed my oil on the spot to the proper 5W-20. I believe Mekatron sincerely tries to serve the best interests of the customer. They have my trust and I will continue to bring my TL-S to Mekatron (1771 Concord Ave., Concord. 925-687-8300).

Amsoil makes a synthetic oil with a viscosity rating of OW-30. It is highly recommended. The company also offers high performance oil filters. You can order online. For technical questions, call Amsoil at 715-392-7101.

Doesn't anyone ever Search?
U might want to read this:
http://www.acura-tl.com/forum/showth...959#post418959

And to the guy who made the dealer pull out the oil and refill it with 5w20 - if they were really looking out for the custmer, they would have left what they first put in.
