never heard of it referred to as an "oil nut"..

as stated.. the "drain plug" is a 17mm.. and i would recommend using a closed end wrench instead of a socket to help prevent rounding off the bolt..

If you're calling it the "oil nut" you'd probably be best off taking it to Tires Plus.

I'm sorry...I couldn't resist commenting on a thread titled "oil nut socket size"

A socket would be less likely to round a bolt than a box wrench (close end) Use 6 point sockets and not 12.

in my experiences its been the other way around.. if i have to break a bolt, i prefer to have a closed end wrench because im closer to the bolt head.. with the socket you have the ability to slightly cock the ratchet to the side and cause the socket to be at a funky angle..

Never had that happen with a socket when used properly. I have on the other hand when really having to break something free that the box wrench rounds the bolt.

Also the Drain plug should NEVER be that tight that you would round the bolt.

I agree. I do like to use a wrench to tighten the plug though..

12 point sockets suck.

Over tightening of the drain plug can strip out the insert. The oil pan is aluminum.

29 foot pounds torque on the oil drain plug
I have seen many come from dealer and speedie places at well over 50-80 foot pounds ~
ready to rip the threads out of the pan!

Also see 80 ft lb spec wheel lug nuts-- set to over 130-140 because thats how tight the air gun will blast them on,

You'd probably be better off if you bought a new ratchet set. If you're doing all the mods yourself, You're probably gonna need some different sizes than a 17 mm.

When I did my first change, I had to use some liquid wrench, closed-ended wrench and a hammer. Sucker was on there.

Whatever it is, it was an explanation of what he is asking for. Oil Drain Plug, the original name of itself is already wrong, so oil nut can't be worse.

Can someone define PLUG? How about earplug? Do you screw it in your ear, or do you just insert it? So, do you insert the oil drain plug or do you screw it in?

some are knowledgeable then others, but as long as you know what he is asking for, I am sure help is always appreciated.

Socket is always better for me then a box wrench.

I had to do almost the same, I was literally pulling myself off the ground. I took it to Tiresplus just so they could break it loose and I could finish the job.

The guy was like "that was so easy to get off" as he was standing there with his air gun and my car was on the lift.

Does anyone know where to buy those nice metal screws that go into your oil pan so you can pull the lever to drain the oil?

Other members have it, and satisfy the way it works. For convenience, I think it is worth it. I get used to the old way of removing the oil drain plug for my own reasons. If you like it, it is nice to have it installed, and make an oil change a breeze. One reason I didn't get it because our oil pan requires an extension plug for the valve to crew on as you can see on the link.

Yeah. It's 17mm.

Normally called the "Oil Drain Plug", but either way it's still 17mm.
