oil change on a slope?

i read a thread that said you can do an oil change on a slope while your front is facing downward?

doesnt the car have to be flat so that all the oil can drain? or can you do it on a slope?

also i am so confused about where to put the jack stands. i know where to lift the car, using the little metal tabs right beside each wheel to life the car, but where exactly do you put the jack stands? everyone has a different answer and i have never been so confused or frustrated in my life. Even on the s2ki.com page no one can give me a straight answer to lift my s2000.

Regarding the draining, since the drain plug is on the rear of the pan, it doesn't make sense at all to have the car sloped downwards.
Generally, level is better. Jacking the front wheels with the drain plug removed will cause more oil to exit the drain as the car is tipped backwards.

As for the jack stand, I use a 2.5 ton hydraulic under my right front lift tab. I don't bother using the stand with that in place.

i havent changed the oil myself on my Tl yet, but with my Accord i use my ramps.
IMO it's safer and faster and you knew you got all the oil out, just gotta line them up and drive up the ramps. Never mind the price, safety comes first considering you'll have a car dangling over your head with just a reg. jack. ! I got them for about $50, for the heavy duty ones. *its a good investment to keep in mind!

squish!! Also if you are on a incline... I would think the jack or jack stands wont be as stable.

so instead of the front of the car down, the front should face up at a slight angle?

also can anyone tell me if i do this with an slight angle like on ramps what direction does the oil shoot out? front, rear, left or right of the car?

I changed my oil using running up ramp...nothing against regular jack but you need to be careful when applying togue opening up the drain washer...sometimes you shake car as well..

I got my ramp for 2 dollar on yard sale...it was pretty good and strong for TL (because it's a sedan, not sure for minivan or SUV)..so good luck..

I'd suggest you not to buy from retail...it's not worth the money...go get used ones.

Look like the same height as mine..however mine has a safety bump that will fit in your tire perfectly...it is just to make sure your car won't slip and rocking.

good luck

my ramps are metal, with teeth on the bottom. the teeth suck because it destroys the asphalt on my driveway, but it's secure! just like beetzbat's ramps, it also has that safety bump plus it came in BLUE! they're also anti slip. Height on mine may be higher by 2-3 inches.

So yeah, you'll be alright just as long as you have your nose raised with a secure device! And dont forget to lay down some cardboard boxes cuz you cant avoid the oil drippings................. Good luck on your buy, and on the oil change itself.

These are the kind that I got, but I bought mine for about $28 from Walmart. My only issue is that I don't scrape right now, but if I am thinking of getting the OEM ground kit and was wondering if they would scrape then.... I need to know how much lower the ground kit will make the car.....

Aside from that, I have had no problems with it.....

I have the same ramp and OEM kit, no scraping. Works great.

I also use wheel chucks in conjunction with the jack; it's not going anywhere. I basically put all my weight on the car and and rock it to test it before getting under. If I don't feel safe I place another hydraulic jack to back up the other. However, if I ever remove a tire I always use a jack stand for backup. I'm a small guy; I can fit under the car without the jack - if I could not I'd be worried.

PS: I've seen a neighbor long ago crushed to death under a '75 caddy doing suspension work in his driveway. It was quite common to see scissor jacks or bumper jacks slip and drop a car. However, it is far far less likely to occur with a 4-wheeled hydrolic jack and chucks on a level surface. In general you should always use as much protection as possible.

its actually possible to change the oil without lifting the TL

if you bank your wheels to the right, you can reach in from the front passenger wheel well, and from there, you can reach both the drain pan, and the filter. i've changed my oil 3 times now, without lifting the car.

I hope you didn't mean to bank it on the SIDEWALK, cuz isn't that considered illegal parking? Just hope a cop doesn't drive down your street then, it could possible be a ticket! :smackhead
