Post Off topic but what do you do for a living?

I was just wondering what everybody does for a living. I am currently in College and trying to decide what I want to do for the rest of my life. I am probably going to get a degree in Business Management.

No offense JavaGod, but what kind of Enterprise system is going to be written in Java? I've never seen a Java program that would run as fast a a C++ program, even given twice as much CPU (or more). I assume performance isn't much of an issue for your systems or else you tell customers to quadruple their hardware budget.

Maybe I'm ignorant. Please enlighten me.

When it comes to web programming, sorry to say, but Microsoft just sucks. They dont realize that most high end servers are Unix-driven, and IMHO Java just works better because of machine independence via the virtual machine. They also do not have a language specification for scalable enterprise systems (well, actually... they do with .NET coming out soon... but everyone knows thats just a big JAVA rip off =) )

So in response to that question, while C++ is probably faster because it is waaay more native with the user's system, JAVA is platform independent and web friendly. (IMHO)

In response to the original thread, I work/attend UCSD doing alot of dynamic web programming with JSP's/servlets/EJB's. Im gonna try to work full time this summer so I can put a down payment on a TL-S by October. =)

Neojin, C++ is a standard with roots in Unix, not a Microsoft development. I can understand platform independence. That may be great for installers, utilities, and web stuff, but REAL business software would choke if written in Java. I can't see the Nasdaq or AOLs e-mail running Java. If they could only develop highly optimized compilers.

Sorry gang... I know its way off topic.

I dunno why, but whenever I think C++ I always think Microsoft .... you're right there, I apoligize for the bad information.

As far as business apps go, I can't really comment because I mostly do web programming, so I will concede on that argument.

Just for some info, Java released a JavaMail API recently, so no more having to turn to PERL for our mail coding! hehe...

yes, this is waaaaay off topic =)

You are asking me to summarize a discussion that has been a major WAR for the past few years between the Microsoft and Sun camp :-) But I'll try...

Java has evolved from its initial days...its a whole different animal now! In its early days it was disappointing because at that time most systems still had a very heavy client side layer! And client side is not where Java can compete with native code.

I used to be a VC++/MFC programmer but nowadays the thin client paradigm is the key. Server side processing is the standard and Java has all the support to develop sophisticated n-tier systems. By contrast transaction environments like Microsoft's MTS are weak in performance, unstable and lacking in features like persistable distributed objects and session management.

Companies are embracing Java faster than you can blink your eyes, from wireless to XML to Enterprise Javabeans to Rules engines - Java has it ALL !!

Java Enterprise System Architect.

sboje - Get with the program. I was a C++ bigot until about 2 years ago. Java is far superior for enterprise development. The extra speed of C++ is not a benefit in enterprise systems. Look at it this way - about 90% of your processing time for a transaction consists of database and network latency. So, even if C++ is twice as fast (and I doubt it's even that much better, with the newer JVMs available), it's still only going to speed up a transaction by 5% overall. Hardly worth the pain of programming in C++. What you're looking for in an enterprise system is to increase transaction volume, and most Java application servers can scale horizontally and vertically much better than, say, Transaction Server (or COM+, or .NET, or whatever they're calling it these days.)

Mikester,

I'm saying nobody in their right mind would develop something like Oracle (the actual database engine) in Java. You may develop the interface and tools on it, but not the database engine itself.

The company I work for writes code for Compaq Nonstop Himalaya systems (formerly Tandem), Unix, and NT. Most of our work is done is C++, but we used Java as well. All of our software is compiled to run on all 3 systems. I'm the Operations Manager, so I don't know all the details of our development environment.

Don't get me wrong... I recognize the benefits of Java. The performance aspect would be a real killer when you are talking about hundreds of transactions per second though.

Director of Client Services at a first stage technology and management consulting company.

I've worked for five different companies in the past five years due to mergers, buyouts, and acquistions - everywhere from a 100 person local consulting firm to PricewaterhouseCoopers. :-)

BTW, regarding Microsoft... I'll say this, they may not have the best technology, but their stuff is far easier to use, set up, and maintain than what the competition has to offer.

I've also seen first hand that the majority of people who complain about the stability or reliability of Microsoft apps have never taken the time to learn how to set them up properly in the first place.

Working for the consulting divisions I managed in the past, we saved clients literally *millions* of dollars using Microsoft based solutions rather than UNIX or SUN based solutions.

If you want to go UNIX or SUN, you need to add a "0" at the end of every cost estimate :-)

Software Developer - 90% Microsoft stuff such as VB COM, ASP, MS SQL Sever, MSMQ, Outlook, etc.

neojin, no offense, it really depends on what and how you do your web programming. A lot of Web farms are running ASPs with VC++/VB COMs on NT boxes efficiently.

I agree with you that theoretically Java's independence sounds better. However, it's NOT really that independent in real life. If MS's stuff really sucks, they won't have their current market share.

Anyway enjoy the Java path you chose and I'm sure that that will be a good career path.
