OBX Headers and UR pulleys installed...Pics

I had a buddy do the pulleys. Would have been fast and simple, till the power steering adjuster bolt BROKE OFF

BUT, after some creative engineering, and a lucky box of bolts, we got that knocked out.

THEN last night I installed the headers. What a pain in the ass. This didn’t work well for a few reasons. The first would be that removing the stock down pipe took an act of god, even lock-tight, a sledge hammer, and myself under the car in the fetal position just wouldn’t budge the LAST DAMN BOLT (of course).

But after we finally got the stock stuff off, it was easy to get the OBX on. Oh wait. I forgot to install the gaskets you said? Well, fuck me.

So other than I forgot to install the gaskets and had to do it all over again, the only problem I experienced with the OBX headers was that it took a little force and bending to make everything line up correctly...

Oh yeah and the box was torn so all the bolts were missing, which was a whole other adventure in itself.

Improvement is noticeable, maybe not as much as I had hoped for between the headers and the pulleys, but im going to give her a little time and see what happens. If I don’t think the gain is good enough, I will not be doing any further engine mods.

I guess we will see how the OBX's hold up, but even as i said in previous posts, even if i had to replace the OBX's twice, im still coming in below what Comptech wants to RAPE people for their headers.

Pics.

i installed the pulleys 2 days before the headers, and yes i noticed a difference. i couldent tell you how much, but the car responds faster and has a little better off-the-line pickup due to the light weight.

Since they didnt come with bolts, i had to run to Home Depot and pick some up.

The stock bolts for the exhaust manifold on each side will work, but the manifold-to-downpipe connections need their own bolts, as the stock downpipe's hole are threaded. the connection between the downpipe and the cat can be used with stock bolts too.

so tottal bolts needed was SIX!!!

Hey Darkshear, can you tell me the part # and description of the pulley that I need? I went on their site but didn't know which one it is. Sorry, I'm a noob at this pulley thing.

BTW, I hear a lot of stories about the pullies sucking the power out of the battery and causing all sorts of electrical problems. Is it true or is it a different kind of pulley?

You mean will it affect the alternator? I don't think so...

http://unorthodoxracing.com/cgi-bin/...ode=0206110_+_

And this one:
http://unorthodoxracing.com/cgi-bin/...ode=0106311_+_

And im running almost 1000 watts in the trunk, and i have yet to have a power problem. alternator is only underdriven by the crank, and the crank is only 15% underdriven.

you can do all 3 if you want, or just the crank.

I got my pulleys second hand from one of the guys here. i got only the crank and alt pulley.

I think i might get the PS just for looks.

I ended up doing all three. It's cheaper as a kit than buying them all separately.

I thought about pulleys but I heard they weren't worth it at all. And the installation, is it a DIY or professional install needed?

Looks good man! Give it about 500 miles to completely break in. Once the ECU recalibrates itself you'll notice the gains. I didn't feel too much power difference with my pulleys on the Legend, but after about a week you could feel a substantial increase in torque throughout the entire powerband.

As far as pulleys causing electrical problems, I don;t think you have to worry. You may notice that your interior or headlights dim when you come to a stop at a light, but other than that you shouldn't have any problems. I'm not even sure if you will experience any headlight dimming due tot he fact that HID's only need about 50% of the energy a halogen needs to run. If you have any dimming lights, you could remedy it by simply regrounding the car (i.e.. sun automotive hyper ground system)

Did you end up using the OEM belts for your new UR pulleys? Or did you have to use smaller belts?

Some waters i dont tread. The pulleys were a professional job.

Nope, had to buy belts. The guy i got the pulleys from included the belts. He sent me the original packaging from NAPA in case i needed to replace the belts in the future.

They all add performance. you just have to decide which of the 3 pulleys you want, and wither you want lightweight, or lightweight + underdrive.

As for gains, look at it this way...My 2000 TL stock, 15.62 @89mph, after H/I/P 14.99 @93mph, and by the way that means I was 82 FEET ahaead of myself so to speak, a BIG difference!

Definitely not DIY. The torque of the crank shaft bolt is over 180 ft-lbs.

My torque wrench doesn't even go up that high! Imagine getting the old one off!

Darkshear -- looks sweet, bro!

Sorry I couldn't hook you up w/ the PS pulley .. i demolished it trying to get it off .. <ugh>

You would NOT have noticed a power difference w/ that PS pulley .. glad you liked the difference w/ the crank!

Darkshear:

So if we were to only get one pulley for our ride, the most important pulley to be replaced would be the crank pulley correct, because that's where you get the most HP loss (from an OEM pulley)? Just wanna confirm this, as this *might* be my next mod. Thx.
