Which O2 sensor is the right one?
Which O2 sensor is the right one?
My son's '99 TL is showing the P0132 code for the oxygen sensor. He has complained of bad gas mileage lately, and it has occasionally ran rough and sputtered.
AutoZone shows two differ Denso sensors for the upstream side, 234-4065 and 234-4209. And they are each one listed twice, one says with California emission, on says without, though I doubt that matters.
For the downstream one they show 3 part numbers 234-4209 and 234-4621 234-4601.
I know they same sensor won't work for both locations, so they have something screwed up on their site.
Which two do I really want?

do you have a CA emission car?- it will say meets 50 state rules on a hood sticker
if its says 49 state you have whats called a Federal car for emission equipment
Its typically the upstream or pre-cat sensor that fails- its the most critical one
try a site like oreillys, rockauto or one of our sponsoring dealers for diagrams and correct info
our sponsoring dealers cut a good price for us!
how old are the spark plugs? do you use the correct 8 dollar each NGK? do you use a fuel cleaner like seafoam or bg44 or similar? and 91 octane fuel only?

its also time to remove the intake manifold and clean egr system passage and port inside
needed every 75kmiles, especially 99s have it bad with only 1 port! easily clogged
causes freaky running problems
easy diy, 2-3 hours at casual pace
another prob on 99s is the ignition switch back- replaced once under recall then on the owner for the next 2-3 times it goes out
everything for your cars needs is in the `Official Gen 2 DIY list`- see top of thread titles for it then scroll thru 2 threads for all the links

The code indicates sensor 1, Not sure on the California stuff but that only matters for Sensor 2 on the 2000 and up models. But first consider a tune up before changing it out.
Check out what 01tl4tl mentioned.

Before replacing the sensor, do as 01tl4tl suggested.....try some fuel system cleaner first. If the TB intake and EGR passageways have not been cleaned recently, now would be a good time. A fresh tune-up with NGK plugs and an air filter may also be in order for the poor gas mileage. After the work, clear the codes and see if the O2 code still comes up. The P0132 code indicates high voltage in the Primary O2 sensor. This is the upstream sensor located at the front of the cat. There is a different # for the CA models and use the one that pertains to your particular state. Check with an Acura OEM online parts source for the original O2 replacement. Our cars are finicky with some aftermarket brands, so compare.

you do remove the egr valve and lube its activator arm, clean the ports, and the holes it mounts on to at the manifold are the end of the passage
many shops would replace the valve and reset the ecu- call it good
a few days later they try again,,,nothing
then you find acurazine with the secret clogged egr passage knowledge- (not something the average car ever has a concern about)
and do a 100$ worth of diy (includes that coil) that makes it run like new again

It was throwing a P0132 code within 30 seconds of starting up and occasionally a P0402. Now it's code free.
I was puzzled why the CEL never came on. When I pulled the cluster to check into the stuck temperature gauge, if found the bulb for the CEL to be missing.
As for the stuck gauge, it looked to me like the clear plastic on the backside got hot and melted a little, effectively gluing it in place. I'll be trolling the local junkyards this weekend for a replacement.
