No more tranny......yay!!

So yesterday i did a tranny fluid change..... easy as pie. So i went on a nice little drive to the san fernando valley....bout 70 miles away....everthing was good.

it was the trip back that was even more fun. There i as cruisin with the wife and kids and frank (2k3_tls). I went to pass a car and noticed that my rpms were going up but i wasnt going faster. so ! down shifted ad thoughtmaybe it had something to do with the hill..... no that wasnt it. downshifting was worse. it was revving like i was in neutral. Then i got the tranny fluid smell. so I pulled over and it was smoking like a chimeny. and all the fluid was pouring on the freeway.

So thats my story. i sat on the side of the freeway for almost an hour and now im going home in a tow truck with my habanero on the back.....maybe its time for the 6spd swap and tls engine......well see.....

this is why its important to do the trans service at 60k at per the book , or earlier if you drive in mountains, traffic or tow anything with the TL

fliud pouring out is bad- either drain plug or main seal- lets hope it was the seal!

Good luck at the dealer-Monday morning is shop meeting for 1-2 hours, nothing gets done and a backlog is created

Sorry it happened. How did the fluid just burst out though? Must have been the seal, did you actually torque it down to spec per the factory recommendation with a torque wrench?

29 foot lbs for those of you DIY fluid changers- thats the torque for both trans oil drain plug and the engine oil drain plug- convenient!

And a new crush ring/ washer is always a good cheap insurance policy

Buying the proper fluid from Honda dealer with receipt and a few pics of you doing the job will cover any question of it- take pic of mileage on dash too

Most dealers are very aware of the trans prob and totally cool about helping you out quickly

And they dont care if its lowered or cai or basic stuff like that- NO Turbos or aftermarket s/c units though~

you could have saved the habanero's life!!! why, oh why did u not let him know sooner???

on the plus side, now i know that my trannys life can go down with the quickness after a flush... so thats out of the question... UNLESS its an Acura dealer.

Not flush, but you do need to drain and fill periodically per schedule.

well i didnt torque to exactly the recomended spec. One, because i dont have a torque wrench, and Two, because i didnt know the spec. So i just did theold german torque, goodentight. Last night it didnt look like it was coming from the drain plug. it looked like it was coming from where the axle was. but it was dark and on the side of the freeway, so i could be wrong.

It was gonna go eventually. It was hard clunking in reverse, and regular driving would cause pop shifts like i was poppin the clutch on a manny tranny(manual transmission not man transexual). So i think doing the fluid change kinda just pulled the plug on the dying trannys life support.

Even if it is just the main seal i would raher just get a new tranny......

would it be cheaper to go tls auto, or tls 6 spd. I need a new engine anyway.....im pushing 180k. so i would rathr buy faster then slower.

so, that being said, with you being off for the day and able to look at your transmission. whats the diagnosis? or rather what do you think is wrong from your perspective?

man... quit procrastinating and hop on that shit.

the sooner you know what the damage is, the sooner you find out what new parts you can milk out of this whole incident.

what you can do is put a little pan or something along those lines underneath the leaking area, when you put it in the garage or driveway.. that way you avoid staining the concrete.

well actually i do know of 1 member that got a new one for free. All he had to do was pay a few hundred for labor with close to that many miles.

damn.. what a lucky member.

at any rate,

did you actually get up off your ass and take a look at what the damages are? we all know you want to have a 99 tl with a tl-s motor w/ 6 speed, but im sure im not the only one here who would like to know what exactly caused your trans. to go out the way it did

i had a hard time getting the fuckin thing into the garage.... that little up hill doesnt look so big until youre tryin to push a fuckin car up it......

anyway, i have no idea where the fluid came out of......the shit is everywhere. i jacked it up took the wheels off. and cant find where the fluid came from. it looks like it came from the top but when i look a the top there is no fluid. most of the fluid is on the outboard side of the tranny and all over the axle and suspension components. so im not sure.

damn.. its probably like that when it leaked all over the freeway before it finally went

yea tell me about the whole hill thing. when my old altima blew its motor, pushing it up that damn car dolly was the biggest bitch on earth. but with help from a few locals (it blew in paso robles), we were able to get it on with some effort.

https://acurazine.com/forums/showthread.php?t=165754

but they're talking about bolting the accord 6-speed (if im not mistaken) to the TL-P engine.

drive it like you stole it. that'll help you out.

either that or a few speeding tickets.

I know that mines been replaced, or so I assume, because on ownerlink it tells me that the problems been "fixed."

Thankfully I havent experienced any problems with it, and if i do i will take it to the dealer as soon as i start experiencing symptoms of tranny failure...

Gotta take advantage of the 109k mile warranty on the tranny while you can. too bad mike is way out of that range..

Believe me....I do...pedal to the floor as much as I can....without getting a tickets..killing my gas milage and tires...but the damn tranny still going. God damn it...it's an irony where people do all kinds of craps to protect their tranny whereas I am trying to test its limits...and it is still going....jesus...

may be you have a TLS..I'm TLP, not enough power to break this POS..arghhhh...

just when you decide that you ant brea it and you stop trying...... youre tranny will give up..... at 109,500 miles and 7 years and 2 months. then youll be like "fuck.....why did i stop trying......why god....why?" and then youll ahev to buy anew tranny......like me.

that would totally suck... knowing my luck if mine ever goes out it would be right at 109,001.

If Mike's TL-P took his tranny out, then Im sure yours can do the same. it just takes time and patience.

which im sure will be followed by a brief moment of frustration, then a moment of happiness (in your case, if your under the warranty mileage). If not then it will be just pure frustration

The way you present yourself pays a huge roll in how far they go to help you. I got my first 2 trans for free (one at 79k and one at 115k) and both were replaced before there was a warranty extension!!

and then you threw in the 6-speed with the type S motor, converted it into the chariot of God, and havent looked back since.

Approximately how many miles have you put on since the swap, and hows the tranny holding up?
