Newbie checking in

So darn excited to be here. I've been a passive observer on this website for almost a month now and I finally got my 2001 3.2TL with navi today. It's silver (just couldn't find the black at a price I could afford). If I forget the final cost of ownership+my loan rate and the tranny issues , I can almost feel the excitement of owning a TL.

Any useful tips, suggestions? Ofcourse I'm going to be reading through the previous threads but there's just so many! First things first, I need to get some detailing done. Get em ugly scratches off, get it all shiny and sleek. Could use recommendations on Bay area shops for my TL needs. I spent 10 minutes trying to find a good spot to park my car at work this morning. Eventually I had to give up and park between these two monster SUVs hoping they dont dent my TL. I need a cool new name for my TL too.

And ofcourse before I forget, I'm Amar. Or you can call me Mark (hence the nick amark), which is what my school buddies called me. That's also what the Dog Tag says

Welcome to AZ. I prefer SSM anyway...black shows to many scratches but looks so good when it's clean. I'll give you a quick run down on what I do for detailing my car. Of course, wash it really well. Then go back with a clay bar...take all the old wax off. Then I apply 1 or 2 coats of Meguiar's NXT for the shine. At lastly 1 or 2 coats of Mother's Caranuba wax for the durability. I love the way NXT looks but it doesn't last. That's why I go with Mother's over the top. I do all that about once a month and wash it at least once a week. Seems like a lot of work but I enjoy it.

Man this site is awesome. I guess you guys hear that all the time. Well, thanks for the welcome. It's great to be here.

snowman81, thanks a bunch for those tips. I'm gonna try those out. While digging through the car today I found a bottle of touch-up paint the previous owner had left in the car. I tried a dab of it on an area on the bumper and boy did it look crappy. Anyway, I guess dings and scratches are something one has to live with in the Bay area.

REDLINEN, thanks for the welcome. Someday I hope to understand all the mods you have on there. sweet!

fsttyms1, I read some good things about you on the forums. I guess that makes you the guru. I'll be seeking your advice for sure There's a sudden urge to start spending on my car, pimp it up, but the sensible thing (financially) would probably be to wait. But then would you call a person who buys the TL knowing all the tranny issues sensible?

This car signifies a lot of things for me and am hoping it will be the start of something great. Happy to be here.

welcome aboard. :-)

The most important mod you should ever do to your TL is convert it to the new 02-03 style front and rear end, if its not for the new style look I'd rather get the new 7th Gen TL

Z3Ro, I'm in Foster City. Live in San Mateo, work in Foster City but just rented an apartment in Foster City. So you can say I've been in a spending mood.

5%Tint, The car has just over 52K miles, silver with Navi and I paid 16.5K. I think it was reasonable considering it's got navi. If you see ads posted on craigslist you'll see all sorts of idiots who expect to get paid 80% of sticker price for a 50K car. This guy seemed alright.

My first scare - This morning the side air bag light started to flash and just wouldn't go. Was in a hurry to get to work so just restarted the car and the light went off. I guess it's time to start searching the forum for known problem issues. Too soon to do so if you ask me. hehe

PS: I love this car. I cant stop talking about it with everyone. I know there are many other cars with better features, maybe higher priced and some may argue even better performance but there's something about the TL! You guys know what I'm talking bout. Anyways back to work before I get fired.

Very reasonable. I paid 16.5 for my 99 TL-P (that's premium, without the sports package) with 40k on it and non-navi, in Concord, CA

Welcome aboard

About your side airbag light, if possible see if you can pick up an owners manual. You may find a great deal on Ebay, etc, and it is very helpful and informative.

If you had any objects on your passenger side seat, or if someone was sitting in that seat, and was leaning against the door, or not sitting up straight, then the sensors in the seat will deactivate the side airbags, and trigger the light in the dash.

If your seats were completely empty, then it could be a defective sensor which is not completely uncommon, and requires a trip to the dealer.

hehe....THe side airbag light turned on the first time, scare the hell oout of me too But it was my friend leaning against the door. In addition, I got the passenger senors replaced under warranty a month ago. Oh well, no car is problem-free, but I really enjoy Acura.
