Angry New sways... now I hear squeaking... HELP!

Damn! Had my new Comptech sways installed by my dealer (Niello Acura) on Thursday. As of yesterday, when I go over any bumps (especially at slow speed -- like speed bumps) I hear massive squeaking coming from my car's rear. Sounds very loud, too!

I plan to take it in to the dealer either Monday or Tuesday. You guys have any ideas? I don't know much about cars (which is why I take it to the dealer in the first place) but it sorta sounds like a rubber-on-rubber sound? Maybe rubber-on-metal. I don't know.

Any help is appreciated,

Vincent

The sways come with a lubricant that is supposed to be used between the sways and the bushings, maybe they didnt use enough or forgot to put it on.

Thanks for the quick reply, Mr. Hyde. I hope it's something that easy! I don't remember hearing that sound late Thursday or Friday -- I wonder what changed and caused it to start making that dang noise?

The kit also comes with a roll of teflon tape. It's use is not mentioned in the instructions, but people have been wrapping their swaybars with teflon tape (where the bushings go) for years, so that's what I did and they're squeak-free. This is something else you might want to check for.

Good luck

There was no lubricant in my Comptech kit. I just put my sways on this weekend. I thought it was weird, because it didn't say anything about applying lubricant, and there was none in the package, but the instructions did mention to wipe lubricant away from the area where the retaining clips go. Hmm.... I did use the teflon tape and I have heard no squeaks or anything so far.

I do have another question related to the swaybars. I noticed that overall, the steering feels tighter on the car now - especially at lower speeds - like it doesn't get as much boost from the power steering or something. Is that just part of the difference with the stiffer sways, or could there be something else wrong?

Overall, the feel is awesome, and it definitely corners better (and doesn't squeal the factory tires near as much as they used to), but I definitely notice the tightness in the steering, and I just want to make sure there isn't something wrong.

I don't think anything is wrong your setup...I believe that's the way it's supposed to react...anyways, I can't wait to get mine tomorrow and have it installed..

You're probably right. At road speeds, it feels awesome. I just noticed stuff like when pulling into a parking space the steering is tighter, and that wasn't something I was expecting.

Thumbs up

Ok... thanks for the teflon tape info. I didn't open up the kit when I received it. I just took it down to the dealer and gave it to them. They opened it (I figured they knew what to do!) and installed everything. I guess what I'm saying is that I don't know if there was any lubricant or teflon tape in my box.

I did request the old parts get put back into the box -- and they did that. I just went through the box and only saw two steel bars in it. No lube or tape, though.

Wish me luck!

Vincent

Sway bars are a suspention part. Its a anit-sway bar. It will minimize body-roll when turning, its installed under the car.
The sways are a must. IMO I love them, the turns on them are soo soild. The whole body-roll is almost gone! Springs help quite a bit too.

Hmmm....funny everytime I hear anyone talking about installing aftermarket products in the Northern Bay Area I hear the name Niello...yet of the 2 cars I know of that got installs there, both of them had improper installs in one form or another. The first one involved a ABP TLS that was in the very first meet I went too (before vperkins had his ride) that had a blue AEM CAI with a bi-pass vavle on it that was not installed properly (didnt cut the pipe...didnt use the rubber mount...didnt fully clear the hood as a result). Now squeaking noises from the rear bar? Even if the kit didnt come with teflon tape or grease (mine didnt come with tape...but came with a special hard to get off grease), they should at least known that the use of one or the other is highly recommended and should of provided it for you regardless...I mean not to bag on them or anything, but isn't that what you pay them for, and at the same time isn't that the reason why you go to that particular dealer in the first place, to make sure you get it done right the first time? Maybe I'm just too much of a do-it-yourselfer. I mean heck, I even had to remove/reinstall my own bumper after the body shop replaced my front end just because they couldnt align it right perfectly. Directions or not, if you have to pay for it, the very least I expect is to have it done right.

I didn't get any grease with my sways either... I was hearing a noise but I found out it was b/c i didn't tighten the end nut enough.. after I fixed that everything seems fine...

The handling is a lot better now but I still miss my slammed integra.. that thing was like a brick... i could take exits at 60 no problem... not that i always did that but... haha..

sounds like the dealer forgot to use the teflon tape... that's my guess... good luck man...

If add the upper strut bar to the whole setup. the steering gets even tighter. I actually like the way it feels.

Should have had lubricant and teflon tape. They should have split the lube between both rear bushings, the Teflon should have gone on the front sway.

Thats what I did when I installed them and I am squeak free. That lubricant was the thickest, stickiest type of lube I have ever seen, you couldn't wipe it off your fingers with a shop towel.

Did you use teflon tape on the rear sway as well???

Like I said, mine didn't come with lubricant, but I did use the Teflon tape on both the front and back and so far I haven't noticed any squeaks.

Hmmm...some people got both the teflon tape and grease with their sway bar kit, others got just the tape but no lubricant. Perhaps a packing issue here? Those of you who didn't get the grease with their sways didn't mention whether you were able to have whoever you bought the kit from send you the grease; did you try to get this oversight rectified?

I dunno about you, but such packing inconsistencies is unacceptable and should be addressed to whomever is packing these sway bar kits. Such constructive criticism may sound a bit harsh but IMHO such mistakes should not be shrugged off.

I got it the other way around. Grease here, but no teflon tape. As for packing inconcistency, I agree a 100% that if everyone else ordered Comptech sways, everyone should get the same parts.

Yeah I put it on the rear sway as well. I put the grease in the bushings and the tape on the bar. Don't know if the tape was supposed to go on the rear bar as well, but no squeaks so I'm happy with them.

Well sheeeit! I didn't open the dang box so I don't know what was in there. I guess I'll be at their mercy tomorrow morning when I take it in for service.

Would the dealer normally carry the teflon tape or the lube?

V.

P.S. Edgalang... you're damn right that's what I pay them for! Hmm... survey says, "... not a happy camper!"

Well gee, Vincent--places like Niello aren't necessarily in the business of installing after-market parts, you know!

Not that they can't install it, but I would imagine that they would have some sort of disclaimer when it comes to doing stuff like that, unless they have something specific in writing that covers installation of non-Acura parts.

OTOH--I have nowhere near the number of add-ons you have on your car; you must be rolling in dough or something to buy all those mods and pay someone else to put them in.

Tony

P.S.: did you even bother to check what came with your alarm? It's supposed to come with two remotes but my bro kept one of them because my remote broke. He also programmed my remote at the same time so that it can disarm your car too!! Just kidding!!!!

Wink

Tdoh, Tdoh, Tdoh, you make me laugh! Niello Acura sells performance parts! I guess they might'a misunderstood me when I asked them, "Can you install these sway bars for me?" But I don't think they did.

The way I figure it -- my money didn't squeak... my car shouldn't either! It'll be resolved on Tuesday, regardless.

Hee, hee. Just proves what the power of compound interest can do for you over time! (Not having a girlfriend also might have helped. )

And rest assured that this was the ONLY time I've not bothered with the details of something I've purchased. I have learned my lesson and won't make that mistake again! I'll be a Box-opening, Inventory-checking Mutha-F***er from now on!

Later,

V.
