Just a heads up

So i was thinking on how i could use more Front seat legroom. Well im in the process of giving myself 2 1/4 more inches. Its pretty easy actually if you have a welder.

here is a little discription of what i did. I had to remove acouple rivots on each side so that teh rail could slide further forward. I used the (what would be the rear bolt for the front bolt, and then drilled a 2nd hole for the 2nd bolt to attach. (circled in red and blue) the one with the arrow pointing to it was the original front hole.

the next picture shows where i welded to strengthen where the rivots were



Hard to see from this pic, but there is a ton more legroom. i added 2 1/4 inches more rear travle to the seat. It makes a huge difference.

 

You're far braver than I would ever be in dealing with car stuff. Taking out the seats and taking it apart would involve messing with side SRS... Plus I'd never figure out how to get it back together.

 

It really wasnt that bad. never really got near the srs unit, plus once disconected your fine as long as you dont try to test teh wires with a volt meter

 

whoa...your interior looks pretty beat up..you should buy some leather and redo the seats too while your at it

 

is that your original drivers seat??? it looks a lot better than mine and you have twice the mileage on that seat as I do.

but props to your little mod to the seat!

 

Most of that is just dirt and grease from my hands doing this project. It will wash off. And what do you expect from a seat that has near 200,000 miles of hard use???
Buying new leather would be a waste of $$ at this point

Nice grey interior. That is what I have on my '01 TL. I was wishing it was black inside for a while, but the grey is growing on me now. It should be a lot cooler when summer comes not having a black leather seat to jump in to.

Great work...but I bet the guy who is stuck sitting behind the driver doesn't appreciate the 2.5 inches of legroom he just lost!

 

Actually minesFERN which is a shade of green My steering wheel needs a replacement though. In a few places it pretty mch has teh color worn off. (hard to see in the car, but pics sure show it)

 

You just never leave well enough alone do you. Always gotta make things better. Props man, next time your bored, borrow my car for a bit will yah...I'd like to have some innovative things done too!

ya its better but I have the tan interior and the seats are hot as hell in the summer. The next car I get HAS to have ACd seats. that is starting to be more common so hopefully when I do get a new ride, it wont be an expensive option.

fsttyms1 is certainly in need of some 303 Aerospace for his dash and some Zaino leather products!!! My interior was looking pretty defeated when I bought her, after I treated her with those...she has the OEM matte finish

 

I was hoping someone would try this mod, i am glad it was done by the man that has done it B4. I am 6'4" and I know the pain regarding leg room, who cares who tries to fit behind us we need to be comfy
I would definetly do this mod but I would have to goto a welder (i don't own my own welder), maybe some JB weld could hold it in place?

 

ya any welding shop could do that for real cheep. when my seat broke - one of the arms that holds the front part broke so my seat was like a recliner (happend while I was driving and when I hit the gas, I fell all the way back - it really could have been a bad deal). anyway, he welded it back on for $5, so Im sure this wouldnt cost much at all to get done

 

Kris, you are a walking Helm's Manual for the TL. Where you come up with these ideas and make them work I will never know. Nice mod though. Keep it up.

 

Yea, i needed more legroom, and man is it nice. Like ousig said, you could find a welder to to weld them for you, it wouldnt take more than 2 min for them to do and wouldnt cost much. most would be wiling ot do it right away. Really the only thing that needs to be welded are the 2 front feet that is minus 1 bolt. the only thing left holding them on is 1 medium (strong) rivot.



The rivot that my finger is pointing to needs to be removed also, but you will be using a different hole to bolt to the slider, so that one doesnt necessarily need to be welded

If you think this is something you want to do let me know, ill try to explain things a little more if you need

It amazing, how complex is the seat mechanism.
Since you already had that seat apart, how difficult it is to replace heat elements? It seems that mine do not work as well. Also, do you know if passenger seat should have heat in the bottom and in the back cushions?

Forgive my ignorance: What is OPDS?

 

Occupant Position Detection System. It's a matrix of 7 sensors in the passenger seat to determine the position and size of a passenger. If it detects a car seat or a passenger that is out of position where the side airbag deployment would pose a danger, it will deactivate the side airbag. When this happens, a light in the dash will come on that says "SIDE AIRBAG OFF".

When the passenger gets back into an upright position, OPDS will immediately reactivate the side airbag and the "SIDE AIRBAG OFF" light will disappear.

 

i have the same color interior man and my steering wheel is the same exact way where are you getting your other steering wheel from????......please let me know i need one too.....btw your always comin up with somethin creative good shit

I havetn looked into it yet. Im sure though finding one in our rare interior color may be tricky to find.
