Hello everyone, I just dropped by to introduce myself.

I picked up a rebuilt 2002 TL-S over the summer for a commuter car, but ended up liking it a little more than I expected. It's smooth and pretty good on gas, has decent power and is just easy to drive. I had a 2005 TL a few years ago and it was also solid.

Been in the car modding scene since the late 90's, gave it up after getting married a few years ago and having kids. The only things that I've done were tinted windows, upgraded the head unit, painted the mud flaps, and changed the spark plugs.

A couple questions:
1. I think the stock resonator was damaged and my car does not have anything underneath the air box. I don't mind the sound of the intake, but my wife hates the humming. Does anybody have those parts for sale (or better yet, free)?

2. I've searched for this, but there's a popping noise coming from the intake. Almost like the sound of popping popcorn. Possibly a valve not seating properly, but it's not consistent. Sounds like random intake backfire. It seems to happen at various times. Anybody experience this and found a fix?

Thanks and I look forward to being a part of this community.

popping is not good- how many miles? maintenance history?- valve adjustments?
water pump/ timing belt done when? spark plugs correct NGK yadayada?

first mod to the TL is toss that intake resonator!!! a lot of them in garages- Im in Ca but surely someone close can hook you up, or junkyard
Lots of ziner action in your area- ck Region section for meetups and drives etc
and that facebook page if so inclined

register the new car with acura care 1 800 382 2238 x5 gets a human
ask if all recalls taken care of- there is a new one for airbag inflator and another for some other airbag issue, Dealer can tell you same info but the 800 is the place that sends notices to owners

Last time I heard popping from an intake was on a caravan with a clogged catalytic converter.
One way to find out was removing the upstream oxygen sensor to relief excessive back pressure.

popping noise could be caused by aftermarket or faulty iacv. I replaced my iacv with an OEM one and the popping noise disappeared.

Popping noises are rather out of the norm for our cars, but hey anything is possible after 10 + years and over 100 k on the dial. Keep us updated !!!

My account only allows one pm at a time until I've posted enough on the forums. I just cleared the welcome pm and should be able to receive one now.

any oil consumption happening? ie: worn valve stem seals?
Wouldn't hurt to pull a spark plug to ck its age and condition, then perform a compression test as you replace the spark plugs with new NGK- about 8 bucks EACH! and worth it
give you an idea of whats really happening in the cylinders- before going further finacially

if valve is at issue- Severely out of spec/loose can cause exhaust valve overlapping with intake= which creates popping back thru intake, not common BUT,,,seen a few times in my life

One of the many reasons a lot of us use a quality fuel system cleaner and sometimes use the insta-clean blaster method to get valves and pistons clean, instantly! that at least keeps compression at spec not higher, and valve edge clean seals better

Of course our egr sytsem clogging inside intake manifold is something to be cleaned diy 2 hours and 3 cans carb cleaner

I've changed the plugs and egr valve. I'll check the iacv next. If that doesn't have any issues, I might have to test compression and get the valves looked at. There is no issue with the ride. It idles smoothly and pulls strong at 130K miles. It's just the first car that I've had with the popping.
I did a couple drain and fills on the tranny for safe measures because the 2nd to 3rd shift isn't exactly smooth, but no slipping and it looks like the transmission was previously replaced.

the issue I mention occurs mostly when engine COLD and goes away once warmed up

Did you use the correct 8 dollar each NGK plugs? wrong plugs will roast in short time!

Again, I would check the IACV. I had the same problem. After searching for answer, I stumbled across this post ( https://www.google.com/?gws_rd=ssl#q...:acurazine.com)
and it solved my problem.

Alright, so I just did away with the air box altogether.
Just screwed the filter to the upper portion and removed the lower part. Ran a snorkel from an opening in the front of the bumper to just below the filter. The hum is gone, the intake is quiet until you step on it, and it pulls much better.

I'll take a look at the iacv this weekend. Thanks again for everyone's feedback.

Yep, was either iridium or platinum. Definitely wasn't copper.

Welcome to the forum

Can you elaborate or post a picture. At first, it sounded like you created a SRI, but then you mentioned running a snorkel. Second part leads me to believe your stock intake is in place and you added a snorkel to the bottom where the intake resonator used to sit?

It's basically a sri and the tube would direct some air to the filter when moving. Probably not effective from a standstill, but I could feel enough difference to say it was worth the time.

This is what I initially tried, but the hum was louder. Removing the lower part of the air box took away the resonance

Ok, that makes sense. Basically you made a custom CAI or (SRI with airflow snorkel - e.g., Icebox). Still got hum, so you cut the snorkel.

Yep, just running without the bottom of the box. Might replace it with a better flowing filter and be done with it.

Thinking about it now, I've already done a lot since I bought the car a few months ago.
*Tinted windows
*Tranny drain/fill
*EGR Valve
*Valve cover gasket
*Oil pan resealed
*Cabin air filters
*Spark plugs
*White LEDs in the gauge cluster and license plate
*Kenwood Excelon DDX491HD DVD receiver at Crutchfield.com with backup camera
*Refinished wheels
*Front/Rear brake rotors/pads

and this was supposed to be just a commuter car, lol

ahhh you kinda want that airbox setup- supposed to remove lower res box and its Y connector to main box but leave in place
ok to drill a few more large holes in bottom of box

A lot of critical ecu information concerns air temp and flow rates, as well as protecting the filter from water splash and penetration during large puddle encounters (see hydro lock)
notice no one else has suggested what you have done - NOT anywhere near the diy! and we have tried everything
keep you foot out of it and under 4000 rom and noise hum should not be an issue
Keep spouses favorite cd ready to go in the car- covers all noises!

Thanks for your feedback. The noise was annoying only at idle. My son's room is directly above the garage and he was able to hear it! lol
The car's running great right now without a hum. It's basically a sri with a regular filter. I think it sits high enough to not worry about hydro lock or water getting to it. If anything does act out of the ordinary, I'll figure out another solution.
