Question New guy has a question

I'm trading in my SUV this coming Friday and after serious consideration it looks that I will be getting a 2002 TL. Now my Question is this...I already have a street legal race car so I'm looking more for a good long distance daily driver. I chose the TL over the Type S due to i think the ride might be a little more comforatable on long trips. Question is what modifications to you guys reccomend to the TL that will get me HP range closer to the Type S....God do I love HP!!!! All suggestions are welcome, and please any prices a companies that you might reccomend. I'm VERY new to the import scence, but obviously not to performance

Comptech make a lot for our cars (Exhaust, headers, springs, sways). If you want to maintain every ounce of the nice ride, I have heard that exhaust, headers, and sways are the way to go. Exhaust and headers will give you a HP and sways will give better handling w/o compromising the ride.

Also, the RES (otherwise known as MM) is said to give a lot of HP throughout the RPMs and some have said that it may work better on the TL-P b/c of the compression raio i think.

The AEM Cold Air Intake will also give you some HP.

With all of that, I don't see a TL-P out performing a TL-S (sigh) but wait until the Comptech Supercharger comes out. It is supposed to replace the intake manifold which is one of the big differences in the TL-S and TL-P HP. I have a feeling that one would want better wheels and tires if he or she purchased the SC though.

Um...that's about it for me. I'm kinda new to all of this as well, but hope this helps.

CHECK www.autocarparts.com for all of the prices on the parts. Tim (Snook) who runs this site runs that one as well. Have not ordered anything yet, but I hear great service and I am looking foward to ordering when I become anything more than a poor college student.

Welcome to the board..
The comfort level is the same if not better on the TL-S IMO.. (I love the TL-S seats).
I think that if you can afford to pay for mods to get closer to the HP of the TL-S.. go ahead and get the Type-S.

The little bit of extra *umph* the TL-S has is just what is needed..

But honestly, I would say to go and take a test drive of both..

but, unless you want a color that isn't available for the TL-S, I still vote that you get the TL-S.

My mind keeps telling me the Type S, however this is the same mind that put Nitrous on the vette when it was brand new

I was really just looking for some very basic mods ex. Intake, Exhaust reprogram etc...I know once I start though that it will never stop...then again does it ever?

How about the NAV system is it worth the extra $2,500?

Thanks again for all the help.

Why would you get a regular TL but then want to mod it to add more hp to it? For that just get the type-S. I really don't think the ride difference between the type-S and the regular TL is that much different. Plus with I/H/E/RES on the type-S, you will be pushing well over 300 hp. This is not including the SC.

BTW, I thought the navi was only $2000 and not $2500. I bought the navi for $2000. Did the price go up?

Bottom line is...... get the TL-S!

I don't think you would be disappointed in the type-s at all. I couldn't compare the ride to the TL-P, but I think you'd be kicking yourself afterwards if you didn't spend the extra to get the S.

Regarding your question on NAV, check out the overwhelming comments in this post and that should answer it for you:

Oh, and BTW, welcome to the board and good luck in whatever you get!!

whoa.. when did the Navi go up to $2500?? I guess I haven't looked a prices in a while..

as if it is worth it or not.. it's truely a personal choice and if you think it is worth it to get it.. you have to ask:

1) Have I ever had to go somewhere where this would be useful?
2) Do you live in a Metropolitan area where they would have a map of my area?
3) Do I like gadgets enough to get it?
4) Is the cost that much more to my payment?

Looks like you will be a perfect fit for this site.. I think the Intake is one of the best engine mods you can do..
And I think AEM has a chip for the V6 engine that was just announced and hopefully should be available soon..

If you have any questions about any mods to the TL-S, just ask.. there are hundreds of helpful members here who are more than willing to help.

btw.. the is a great feature..

You said you prefer smoother rides for a daily driving . You won't find on the Type-S cause if has stiff suspensions for performance. But then you wanted HP. The Type-S does offer you a lot of it. The choice is yours, but I would recommand the Type-S. Since it is already a sports-sedan, you will feel good adding the upgrades to it to make it cooler. The normal TL does save you around 2k, but the Type-S performance is really worth it if money is not the issue.

The nav is only 2000, not 2500. You can bargain another 1 or 2 hundred off it. It's possible, but really difficult.

Good luck shopping~!

I would go with a TL-S and just further modify it. With springs you aren't compromising much, either...Sways are a must, CAI isn't so necessary, I'd wait for comptech's Icebox, i'm sure it's not as loud as the AEM CAI though...Exhaust...go all out....
BTW, the Acura Navi is among the best on the market..well worth it.

My biggest concern with the Type-S was the ride quality also. After driving a TL-S and TL-P back to back on normal roads I didn't notice degradation of ride quality. For 2k basically you are getting 35 more hp, 16lb/feet of torque, MUCHO better front seats, perforated leather, 17inch wheels, white gauges and VSA. You can always mod stuff later but you'll never get a TL-P to equal a TL-S. The S is a great daily driver and I have no regrets stepping up to the TL-S. Do it, you won't regret it...my word on it .

OK, Ok, you guys are good! You convinced me to go with the TL-S and the NAVI system, and yes you were right, the system is only a $2,000 add-on :o

Now a question... I looked up the cold air intakes, but none of them will say what the expected HP increase is for any particular unit

I'm trying to add about 20-30 more HP thats it. What are my best options and approx. prices?

Thanks

your best bet is comptech headers, aem cai, and RES...
those three bolt ons will certainly get more than an
30hp gain...
headers are about $1099, Intake about $250 or so w/by pass,
and the RES is said to be $299.
oh, the RES has been known as the "mystery mod" for the
longest time, so you can put a search on that on this site
and read up on that.

Nice choice, the TL-S is way better. You should get the RES, Intake, Headers. The sway bars are a must.

11.2@128MPH!! Nice!

Yes, I would definately get the Type-S. The TL-P might put you to sleep if you get into it after driving that Vette of yours.
Personally, I like a somewhat firmer ride on my daily drivers. I guess it's the way I drive. The S to me is still a soft enough ride IMO.

What else do you have done on your C-5, aside from the laughing gas?

Pretty much you name it and it's been done! Intake, Heads, Cam, Headers, HI-Flow Cats, Exhaust, Tires, Lowered, CRYO-Treated rotors and the list goes on...

Incredible car, but it's so hard to hook up on the street. Need a much stronger clutch as well, the one thats in it is about fried. Get weekend car, but makes a lousey daily driver, esp. someone my size...6'4" @ 294lbs. Thus the reason why looking at the Acura. One of the best bang for buck cars you can buy...Next to the Vette that is
