Arrow new defect?

hey people, i found something odd about the inside rearview mirror. it seems like the *chromium* stuff (or the stuff that makes the mirror auto-dim) has pulled away from the left side or disappeared. the shading is uneven in this area as compared to the rest of the mirror. when i turn OFF the auto-dim feature, the part of the mirror in question (left side) is the exact same shade as the rest of the mirror! i normally use a clean rag or auto glass cleaner. of course, it is most noticeable at night when the feature is turned ON. this leads me to believe it's a defect...so has anyone noticed this at all, or has someone already had this corrected (but did not post the info)?

2002 tl-s
bought 5/16/01
~15,000 miles

thanks!

Haven't heard about this one yet. Take it to the dealer...

I believe that the auto-dimming mirror actually uses a liquid crystal that turns slightly opaque when a small current is passed through it. If your mirror is dimming unevenly, it's probably due to a problem with the liquid crystal and the dealer should simply replace the whole unit.

Our auto-dimming mirrors are electrochromic devices (i.e. they change color with the application of electricity).

The substance used is a colloidal gel that turns dark blue when it is reduced (has electrons injected into it). The gel is sandwiched between the mirror surface and a pane of glass. The interior of the space has two translucent electrodes; sometimes the electrodes themselves are made of electrochromic materials to reinforce the effect.

When in doubt, let the dealer figure it out.
