I used to use Eagle One leather conditioner for my seats. I thought it was average. It didn't give the smell i desired, nor did it give a clean shine (w/o that greasy look). For our leather furniture in the house our maid uses Tanner's Preserve leather cleaner (spray btl) it is made by Eagle Ottawa. I tried using it on my leather, and i think its great. Luckily, my seats are in flawless shape, and if you don't need the moisture provided by a leather conditioner, i think this works great. Best of all it gives a good strong leather smell, yet its not too much.

It's the oils in the leather seat.

What you are really smelling in a new car is the off gassing of the new plastic component. It is not exactly good for you. Who knows that stuff is probably toxic.

It's not the leather, it's the plastics and whatnot (as others have pointed out, cars without leather interiors still have the "new car smell").

I personally don't like it, it makes me kind of naseous. I drove around with the windows half-down for a month or two until it went away.

The straight dope on it (from the Straight Dope website no less) can be found here:

is it the plastics.. I read somewhere that it is the glue used in the seats and what not that exactly comprises the "new car" smell and subsequent hi that is achieved... well keep on enjoying it guys.. I hear that keeping the windows closed helps preserve it...

Thanks for the replies , you have a point in there , come to think about it I begin to realize that it mightn't be good.

Yep, it's the oil in the leather all right. Last weekend, I applied the Hide Food conditioner to my driver seat, and the leathery smell is more noticeable, especially when the interior has been warmed from the car sitting in direct sunlight. I read that this Hide Food stuff is made of white spirits and rendered animal fat, so it's probably the closest thing to the leather's natural oils.
