"New" car, new problems
I just purchased a 99 3.2 TL with 31k miles. I have had it one week and the check engine light has come on. The engine seems to surge at random times when I'm at stoplights. It also seems to downshift a bit harsh when going into first.
I've already taken it in once and they said it was due to carbon build up on a sensor. The cleaned it and it seemed OK for about a day. It's not back to the this nonsense. Has anyone ever heard of this? Any ideas?
thanks
alex

Rocket,
the check engine light was probably just carbon build-up on the EGR sensor like the dealer said, a common occurance in TL's. The stoplight thing is also normal. When the system kicks on the A/C, the idle over adjusts for a split second. And since most people only apply as much pressure to the brake pedal as they have to, this makes it feel like a surge, sometimes makes you feel like you got rear ended lightly... its NBD....
The tranny on the '99s has always been a little rougher than the 00-03's, but we dont have the tranny failure problem... mine is getting worse and worse, i got my car last august with 32K on it, now it has 68K on it so no wonder. and i beat the **** out of my car. im going to do a tranny flush on it and see how it goes.
The BG thing is a good idea, but do the entire 3 step treatment. your dealer or someone with the compression equipment will have to do it though. worked wonders for my car. felt like it took 20,000 miles off the odo....

follow up
Thanks everyone for the info. What is the BG 44k Treatment exactly. Is it something with very little mechanical know how can tackle, or should this go to the shop?
Also, I fear the surging is more than something that simple. It surges over 1k RPM's. Any more thoughts on that?
thanks
