Is the Navi worth it?
Is the Navi worth it?
hello everyone,
I am going to be in the market for a new TL soon and i was wondering if the Navi is really worth it? I am very picky and want to find a Black TL, preferably a 02 TL Type S but will take a 99-01.
I would really like to find a black on black Type S with Navigation and a kit, but will probably be to hard to find. Mostly because I want a little higher mileage card so the price will be lower, not to high mileage though.
Basically I am asking because I have found lots of 99 Black but with no navi, same with Type S or they have the kit but no navi.
This brings up another tough question, TL-P or Type S ( I know it has been asked before)

That is going to be hard to find. Did they even make that color combination for the '02 type S? I know the type S only came in a certain color combos, whereas the the TL-P came is a broader range of colors. In the used car market - yeah I think navigation is worth the price, since the price isn't all that different. Stay away from the '99. It's a disk-based unit that's not supported by updates anymore.
I have a white/parchment 02 type S with navi. I've never regretted getting it.

What is your budget? I think its worth it, but you can always add it after. The cost of adding the OEM navi is only dropping as the cars get older. I got all my parts for about $600, and alot of them were new!
I bought mine used, and when looking originally, I did NOT want navi. I found one with Navi, and I have been AMAZED at how excellent it's been. I can read a map, and follow directions, so I didn't see the point. But now that I have it, it's awesome. It's very quick to plan a trip to someplace new. I like the fact that it can be set to automatically reroute you if you have to go off course. It lets you know how far/how long you are from your destination, and many other excellent features. I think it's worth looking for one with it, and good luck!

I just think it will be hard to find a Black on Black with Navi and don't want to pass up on one without, especially if the navi isn't worth it.
How often do you guys use the navigation?
I have a 99tl with navi, i swapped out the hdd based unit in the trunk with the dvd based unit and i'm running map version 2.40 and i love it, i feel i can go anywhere in this country and always know where i'm at, and when u are far from home on a highway somewhere and your almost out of gas the navi gets u to a gas station quickly
Well, someone had to play Devil's advocate. I have been in a bunch of cars with navi and driven most of them with navi on. My conclusion is unless you are driving to lots of places, very frequently, that you dont know the way navi is useless. I drive a LOT, like 30-40,000 miles a year, but most of the time I know 90% of a trip. So maybe you use navi 10% of the time, if you drive as much as me.

I know exactly what you should get.......if you dont you'll be biting your elbows asking your self why

Take a look in the Off Topic section of this forum Private Sales and look for a car there.
I had a handheld gps before getting the TL and really enjoy having a built in unit with larger display.
It may be cheaper to find the car you want and just get a 300$ Garmin though
Updates for the nav are 200 bucks and you will end up buying at least one during the time you own the car

NAVI! Ok maybe it works about 30% of the time, keeps giving me businesses in other states - even when i use the "Catergory" way of getting the directions. If you have an address I'm sure it will get you there. I love the option to "Go HOME!"
The nav on my 07 Type S is very good, but some decisions are left to the driver.
You're asked to choose between route types such as Most Direct, Easiest, Maximize Freeways, etc.
But none of these will send you down a side street to avoid a long stop light or will allow you to slip through a neighborhood to run the "hypotenuse" of a triangle of main roads.
I also have the XM traffic which, at a total cost of +/1 $150 (with the requisite XM radio) I will NOT be renewing. If a main artery is blocked, so are all the alternate routes.
But when I need the nav, I've found it easy to program and to use. Its been flawless in operation and reassuring. When I drive my spouse's car for a long trip, I miss it terrribly.

I don't use the navi very often but love the look of the dash with it. People are still amazed by the voice and how it works = she tells you where to go. I could do without it, but really like having it. I think when you get in a TL with it and see the features and how it works=like the rest of us, you'll want that toy! The Dash also looks very cool with it.

Like the other guy said, I really like how the dash looks and the ac controls always impress friends.
If you get an 03 it will have OnStar also, which is nice. HOWEVER, its the analog system and will no longer work after fall of this year I guess
navi is definetly worth it...although $2000, we got the '99 (showroom car) when the 2000 model had just been introduced and drove it off for 30,112 after reg and everything with 46 miles (says right here on the pink slip
!) but i'm pretty sure i would we would have regreted not getting NAV
makes all the difference in the world. although the maps are a little outdated!!

Ya, I want to try and get a "back up" copy of the 2.40
But then I realize that if it wasnt for good sales of earlier versions there may not even be a 2.40
I just cant justify $200 for some extra POI.
Not sure if my dvd is original but I have a 2003 with v2.05

For me the navi and the VTEC sold the car. Even if you dont use it that often its still fun to play with. If you have the option get it, if not i wouldnt fret. Unless you feel like taking apart half your interior to install it.
While the Acura Alpine Nav unit does have some issues regarding nearest food being 2300 miles away and such, the thing I REALLY appreciate is-
Nav unit eliminates 90 percent of all arguements with wife in car!!!
Now its not HER fault! No longer is she required to watch for turns and read map
That girl in the dash is responsible!
On the updates_ More than POI gets updated.
I lived on a non existant part of the map until I went for the 2.3
Now I can even find new back ways in my own neighborhood
For those that like alternate routes not provided by the car gps, get a Garmin handheld
It will let you program in waypoints/markers and personal routes.
