Is My Transmission Failing!?!
OK... here is what is happening,
Starting today, while driving, my transmission has started "slipping" while I've been driving it. Basically, when accelerating, there will be a ka-chunk - then the revs shoot up like the car is in neutral. Im driving in D5, and don't drive that aggressively... I've seen redline a couple of times, but nothing close to racing.
First time this happened, I was rolling in traffic about 15 mph, I goosed the gas a touch to keep pace, and it slipped. I pulled to the side, shifted into neutral, then back to D5, problem left.
Another time, about an hour later, light acceleration from about 35 mph, same thing.
Yet another time, this time worse, on the freeway - at about 65 mph, accelerating to pass a car, and the slip, ka-chunk, and bounce off the redline....
Are these the beginnings of transmission failure? I plan on
b!tching to my dealer asap about this....
so other stats...
car purchased June 2001
12857 miles
any advice?
thanx.

You need to bring your car in ASAP!!!! or else you'll probably get stranded on the road with a dead tranny. I was lucky that my tranny started to go while I was driving to the dealership. It died as I pulled into the service drive.
Complin, complain and then complain some more to service or else they won't give a rat's azz about you...
As far as a TL or CL loaner, hahahaha, good luck because that's hard to get. I got one after I bit_hed over and over again. They stuck me with a corolla, jeep and sunfire before they gave me a TL-S loaner.

Welcome to the club! I will add you to the list. Sorry to hear about your tranny.
I wish SOMEONE would figure out what is happening to these things.

OK,
here's the deal...
so the salesman at Los Gatos Acura was kind enough to tell me there is nothing they can do, since service is closed on sundays...
when I spoke to his manager, I was given a knowing look when I mentioned the transmission problem, sort of like... "yeah yeah" and a loner was provided... no word on how long or what repairs to be made.
so for now, I am driving a black '97 2.2 CL... not too much unlike the 94 Accord EX I used to drive.
at least there is a hand brake though.... so time for some rainy day 180's.

OK....
so the word from the mechanic was that my transmission slippage was due to a faulty solenoid. This came from the Acura tech-support line. SO, he performed a "triple flush" and a solenoid replacement. During the operation, he said he saw leaking ATF, so that was probably the culprit.
I asked him if he suspected the transmission, and he sort of muttered "yeah - you'll probably need a new tranny" - but as it is, he has to jump through certain hoops in order to justify a transmission replacement.
So I got my car back today, and it worked fine for half an hour, then it begins to slip again... and again... and again... worse than ever. To add insult to injury, while driving back home (too late to return car to dealership) the check engine light, and the VSA-no-work-light come on, and I barely limp home using cruise control whenever possible to maintain speed.
First thing tomorrow, car goes back to dealership, and this is now officially strike one for the california lemon law. I spoke to my attorney friend, and she suggested that if I am serious in pursuing this matter legally, that I might look into suing Acura for breach of contract (they were supposed to fix problem, it wasn't fixed, they breached.)
I've really lost a lot of confidence in Acura... I mean, my 94 Accord EX from back in the day saw the wrath of my driving, and never suffered like this... scary is the day when I might consider buying an American car for reliability as opposed to the Japanese one...

Burning Brakes
Don't forget we might BE driving an American car disguised as a Japanese one!
I read a lot of these failure issues, and it seems to me, that based on the symptoms, that there might be many incorrect diagnosis going on. Are the trannys REALLY slipping per se, or is it more of a gear disengagement thing. Is this compounded by something going on with the lockup torque converter, and is the computer letting the engine go to redline in a "neutral" mode simply to protect the drivetrain overall.
It will be interesting to see how it all works out. Sometimes the hardest problems have the simplest (and cheapest) solutions.
BTW, no problems yet with mine. 6300 miles.

Hello everyone Im new here,
The guys from NSXprime.com pointed me here for information.
I have a 2001 CL-S. The transmission has not been right since new. During hard corners/S turns the transmission baddly mis-shifts and/or slips.
I complained at the dealer and they initally blamed my tires? I also checked the fluid often.
At 21,000 miiles the transmission burned up big time. Massive slippage, Idiot lights, lots of burnt transmission fluid smell. Take notice from the previous posts, you don't have much time left once the slippage starts (I almost got stranded)!
They replaced the transmission under warranty with a remanufactured unit. The new transmission makes notibly more whine. Then yesterday I noticed the new transmission starting with the same initial symptoms (slippage in sharp corners).
Am I the only one here with this problem? Has anyone else had transmission problems? Is this a weak point of the car?
Boy I wish I had waited for the 6 speed!!!

Not a Blowhole
![Question](https://acurazine.com/forums/images/icons/icon5.gif)
..and then there is my situation. I have owned 3 TL's: 1999, 2000, 2001. I put over 20,000 miles on each. All were modified for higher power. None has ever had the slightest transmission problems, either functional, smoothness, or slipping related. No failures of any major component in any - the biggest problem I have had was a defective from the factory valet trunk overrdie switch (in the glovebox). Am I just lucky or typical of the Silent Majority?

I put 47,000 miles on my 99TL-NAV, and never has a single problem. Never. The tranny was solid as a rock.
It must have to do with the 5 speed tranny.
