second....I do not think your car will be a salvage title or a write off or anything...the damage you sustanained is all minor body and suspension damage...the doors are still closed tightly at the tops indicating no structural damage to the car...I would guess damage to be around 10-14k. Your car will be like new when it is fixed as long as you use a REPUTABLE body shop, not just the one your insurance company suggests...
Phew, you made me feel a little better. I took the car to the shop Cush Acura in SD recommended. It's in Escondido called Stroyer Bros. I spoke with the estimater there and my AAA claims handler about OEM parts and they said that's all they will use in this case, plus the car is very new still.

I'm still bummed about the damage though and not being with a car for a month or two. I'm also worried about tranny damage since the front wheel was hit with the force directing the axle in toward engine bay.

Initial Estimate

So far the estiamte is at $8,000 from the insurance company. They didn't go through everything yet. So far it only includes the sheet metal, the two wheels, and repair work on the rear wheel housing.

According to the estimater that actually works at the shop, no suspension work has been included he says he needs to tear down the car to find more things. He also said the rear wheel housing needs to be completely replaced (the insurance adjuster put 5 hours of repair work, he said this was BS). Also, he said the front has obvious suspension and steering component damage that still needs to be estimated. There is a slight dent to the frame near the hinge on the front door. I don't know much more about this yet. But he said there doesn't seem to be any major frame damage by looking at it from the outside.

As far as getting a write-off for the value of the car, he said it wouldn't happen unless he finds something substantial. Looks like you $15K people might be almost right. He said he'll have a chance to get a better look on Monday/Tuesday and then he'll need me to authorize to have the car torn down to find other damage. Glad I didn't have it taken to an insurance affiliated shop.

Also I'm worried they fix it and put a salvage title on my car. That would really suck. Then I might try to sue on something.

How do I get a lump sum. AAA said they will be paying the auto shop directly and then getting the money from the other party's insurance.
Make sure that they add in depreciation figures. Go talk to the dealer, see how much less they'd be selling the car after an accident versus what you paid. You're bound to loose atleast $4k in value, by law the insurance has to compensate you for the value loss in addition to repair costs.

I read somewhere that many policies in California exclude depreciation payments. Anyone have any insight on this?

FINALLY, the long awaited day has come.

Guess what? I got my car back today. Such a great feeling. She's still a beauty. Handles great. All numbers were good in relation to the frame position and suspension. All new parts were used. All paint looks good, though I can still tell myself since I know exactly what they painted. Also, they needed to re-tint my driver window since they scratched it. Except I wanted it to be done at my OWN shop so I could get the exact same tint. It looks VERY close. They either gave me a semi-metallic 50% or since it is a newer tint it appears slightly more reflective to me. Should I demand to the insurance company that I have it re-tinted again at my own shop?

Cost of repairs (you may become light headed): $18,407
Cost of rental (171 days): $5521

Total damage to insurance company (the other guy's): ~ $24,000

Should've bought me a new car.

Except I put 14,000+ miles spread over two rentals which makes me a little happy. I have a 9 month old car with only 7700 miles on it. And not to mention, the new leather smell from the new driver seat cover.

Feels good to be back. I WILL be at the next So. Cali meet. So plan one soon. You can all look to see if you can spot the damage/repairs. We can place bets. J/K.

Welcome back! Why did it take five months for the repairs? Maybe you're right, the other guy's ins. co. should've just given you $24k as a down payment of an '03, or as a bank payoff...

Woot!

Sounds just like mine. Initial estimate was around 17.5k but they had to order me new headlights (got stolen at the shop) new transfer case cover (discovered crack before driving it), new catback piping (was misaligned. Didnt notice during the estimate), new spoiler (as a gift), and $600 more to the dealer to trouble shoot electrical problems with the seat.

After everything...I was around 20 something.

Thanks,

There were many reasons why the repairs took long:

1. The lawyer was trying to have it totalled. (1 mo)
2. Sat on their lot for because another large hit was being repaired ahead of me now. (2 mo)
3. Actual repairs. (2.5 mo)

The spot welds look incredible. I inspected them before they painted over them. Look exactly like the factory welds. I'm impressed with their workmanship and quality. The paint is extremely close to being matched perfectly. I'm still wondering about the tint though. It just bugs me how it's every so slightly different than the rest of the windows. I will ask them exactly what kind of tint they used on Monday. Also I found a scratch on my armrest right at the front left corner of it on the side. Other than that and my missing stickers, for which I have written Acura, the car looks, feels, and drives like before. Let's hope it stays that way.

Yes, this tested my patience. I couldn't even handle 2 weeks without it at first but I got over it I guess. I learned to have fun in the rental. E-Brake around corners, drive over curbs like it's a truck, etc. I kinda miss that actually. Mostly I miss putting miles on another car I don't own.
