Post My car was OVERHEATING today!

We were in the city and when I stopped to park my car, I noticed the needle was extremly close to the H on the thermostat. I was like WHOA!!! It has never happened before so I called the dealership up and they said to bring it in tomorrow. What do you guys think it could be?

I bet you tomorrow, they will not find anything wrong with the car.

P.S. I know when it is hot out, the car is supposed to be a little warmer but it was just way to high to be normal.

Broken hose. Be careful, overheating could damage your engine. If that is the case it would only take about 10 minutes to fix it. It doesn't have to be broken, just leaking. It could also be a sensor, but not likely.

its also possible that the thermostat in the cooling system is stuck. Not sure how old your car is, but that usually doesn't happen for a few years if ever. Good luck tho!

Be careful; overheating an aluminum head engine can lead to a blown head gasket and warped head pretty quickly and easily. If it starts overheating again, dont drive any more and tow it in.

Look on the bright side. If your engine overheats you have an excuse to perform a Type S engine swap. j/k. Hope everything turns out well.

yo black tl, im gonna warn you, and to anyone else, whenever your car overheats like that, you must (this is a definately a must) change your tranny oil. the oil is very sensitive to extra heat, your tranny will go shot if you dont do anything bout it.
sooner the better. i had that(not the tl) one situation, car overheated, and one month past and boom car wont move. the tech guy said always change the tranny oil with situations of overheating.... just lookin out

Never heard of that before, but better safe than sorry with our temperamental trannies. The "overheating" could be attributed to a defective sensor...my old Legend had the problem where the temperature sensor was on the fritz, so it didn't know to kick on the fans when the car got real hot.

How often are you supposed to replace your tranny oil? What brand is good?

I had a VW Jetta that overheated and I decided that I could drive it to the dealership instead of having it towed....BIG MISTAKE!! It ended up that they had to replace the radiator and they had to replace the transmission because the fluid got too hot and it fried the tranny! Luckily it was under warranty, but still! I would have the car towed to Acura, just in case. We have Acura roadside assistance anyway, so it should not cost you any money. Just an FYI.

OK guys, heres what happend. I was hoping it would overheat when I got there and indeed, it did. The moment I put my car into park, it started overheating. Steve, the service advisor looked at it and saw it. I am glad because this way, they know it definately happens. They looked at it and drove it for about two hours and told me my thermostat was bad. I don't know if they were telling the truth or were just replacing the smallest thing to get me out of there. But so far, so good. I drove it home, approximately five miles and I noticed my tranny acting a little weird. This is probably because they were trying to drive it a little rougher than it has been driven to make it overheat. I'll let you guys know if how my cars doing throughout the next couple of days.

By the way, I want to thank all of you for all your help with my problem. You guys are the best.

Actually, I think that Acura recommends that you change your tranny fluid every 30,000 miles. Personally, I do it every 15,000 and I think anyone who does a lot of stop and go or hard driving should do the same. Try it and see if your tranny isn't smoother. That annoying hesitation when you put it in Drive is also lessened.

well depending on your driving habits, acura claims change tranny oil every 60,ooo miles or so, way too far off esp a normal average driver, if your a hardcore dood that floors his car everytime hes in the car, it would be wise to change tranny oil once a year. it may sound to soon, or whatever, but i had a situation where i floored my camry everyday, one day it overheated and coinkidinkily it was in nyc manhattan (black tl ) and its supposed to be reliable but of course the tranny went shot a month after it overheated, but my friend hoo works at parkway toyota(best toyota dealership in bergen) says most trannys lasts through out the life of the car , just change the oil frequently with whatever driving style. you drive hard and give engine the stress, change motor oil 3000 miles, normal driver 4,000 to 4,500, barely drive it change every 5000 miles, what ever it is no more than 5000 miles. umm the tranny oil should be changed once a year if you drive like a nut (a pure ricer), if you drive moderately and conservatively drive change t. oil every 2 years or so, just feel the car out and if you feel it not smooth as it used to be check tranny oil throo the dipstick. tranny oil has a wine color to it, as all mechanics say, sort of purplish, and if it smells burnt, or a rotten egg smell then the oil is needs to be changed. hope this helped guys!
