motorized trunk? FSTTYMS1 check this thread.
hey sup guys
i was thinking about motorizing the trunk lid of my car so it opens by itself (for show purpose) (i be getting a sound system soon)
i know someone on the board put hydraulic struts to hold the trunk (like the hood) i think it's fsttyms1 (sp?) and i would basically have to do the same thing but with linear actuators instead?
what do you guys think?
fsttyms1, if you see this. can you tell me how you mounted and everything and how it's made like a diagram or something.
thanks a lot.

hey ive actually thought about doing this myself, ive just never got around to looking for a actuator.
here are acouple pictures i had of it. i baisicly made a mount plate out of angled aluminium and poprivited it up bu the shock tower. then i drilled a hole in the swing arm and mounted a strut end. its a bolt with a ball on it-baisicly a piviot head. the tl has them on the hood i think?? (i had acouple laying around) you can get them from a salfave yard from like blazers or any thing that has a liftgate or hood with them)

this is amazing....so any size strut will work? and that pivot, is that what it's called as a part?...a pivot head? and how is it attached to the strut?
i would definitely do this ...cept without the motorized close feature....sweetness.

fsttyms1, dont they offer stiffer torsion bars for the trunk in case you put a spoiler on, to help compensate for added weight?
Being that I dont have a spoiler, a beefier torsion bar may do the trick.
I dont mind having to close my trunk, its the opening it with both hands full of grocery bags in the rain that I would love having the trunk open fully (my old Taurus did that).

If you purchased the OEM spoiler, it came with a stiffer trunk lid torsion bar. It prevents the trunk lid slamming shut due to the added weight. And believe me it does make a big difference.
Is it just me or doesn't the torsion have two settings, one for with a spoiler and one without.. I believe the stock torsion bar can go in either position to accomidate the setup.
Am I wrong? I know there are two notches where the torsion bar mounts, and the bar is currently in the first position. I assumed if you were to set it to the second position the trunk would open faster, on a car without a spoiler, and considering I don't want a spolier on my TL-s I've never moved the torsion bar on either of my TLs.

Thats funny that you guys brought this up. My buddy and I are in the process of doing this to my trunk to accomodate the fiberglass enclosure mounted to the trunk lid with my 12"screen and Kicker components. We installed all that awhile ago, but now that it's getting closer to "Show" time, our first idea was to use hydraulic shocks...
WRONG. We tried like 10 different ones with no luck; they were all too strong (too much force). We finally tried a hydraulic shock for the rear glass hatch of a Ford Explorer, but that was also too strong (but that was the closest we could get it). We are now waiting for a linear actuator from cardomain.com. The actuator will be wired into my 2-way alarm system so that after I pop my trunk (via my alarm pad), I push another button and my trunk slowly opens.
Like I said, not done yet but it will be in the next few weeks...

So has anyone tried setting the torsion bar to the setting for the spoiler even when there isn't one and seen what happens?
I'd be interested in this. Although if it caused the trunk to fly open and bounce like a Ford Taurus, no thanks. I like how Mercedes cars open the trunk smoothly.
