The motor is locked up....
Well I was on the way home tonight and this god awful banging started, and then the motor died. I tried to crank it again and it did crank but there was more of the same sound.
Now the motor seems to be locked. It won't even turn over and I can't get the pulley's to spin at all. I took off the cover on the manifold and there are definitely some metal shavings in there.
Any idea what it might be? I'm thinking its not related to the timing belt... I had it replaced 20,000 miles ago.

check the oil level first, is it burned or gone?
pic of what you removed so far would help
Dont believe timing belts wont fail just because they are recent- were the tensioners all replaced at tbelt time?
IF it was the tbelt broken and you tried cranking it over more- that is bad, but the metal shavings sound like its much more serious than that
What is miles now?

Knocking sounds, pieces of metal and a siezed engine sounds like a 'thrown rod' to me. Get it to a shop where the valve covers can be pulled and start from there. Metal chunks are never good in any mechanism with moving parts. Good luck

wouldn't that be great for bull, if something internal snapped a pin and the oil pump failed- and it was found to be defective materials-
instant warranty on all damag caused as result of that part failure---maybe a fresh new motor!!! since a dead oil pump would scorch everthing that moves.

The kinematics involved in over stressing a connecting rod is complex, and should never happen in normal circumstances. Random material defects not whithstanding.
