Most expensive Tranny fluid change EVER
Went to change the transmission fluid this morning. Well the drain bolt was very seized (broke a ratchet), so I soaked in in penetrating spray. When the bolt finally gave way it actually cracked the tranny case, fluid went everywhere. The crack is so big there is no way it can be welded, its at the dealership now having the case replaced. This turns into a $1600 fluid replacement job. Must have been a tiny flaw in the metal or something. I've never had this happen on any car ever.

The only deal will be me handing over $1600 and them handing over my keys when its fixed. Called Acura customer care, I figured I had nothing to loose. No luck there either. Oh well, sometimes life kicks you in the jewles.

what year and miles? ever done the fluid before?
at acura care was it just the phone rep who said `no help` or did a real acura manager call you back about the situation?
MANY of us have experienced the super tight trans drain plug-- which the correct torque of is only 29 foot pounds, same as the oil drain plug
Whether the machine that installed them was out of adjustment of what,,,but I would do a letter writing campaign to corp for assistance.
They respond to letters as being more serious of a person than one who just calls

I stripped the hell out of my tranny drain bolt. It seems whoever changed it last torqued it over 100ft/lbs because I literally had most of my weight(250lbs) on the ratchet and it wouldn't budge until I got some liquid bolt loosener stuff on it.m I wonder if it comes from the factory torqued that much?

After they got a close look at everything, the price went up to $2800. The service rep at the dealer talked to a couple of his contacts at Acura and got the price down to $2000 for a new transmission. So I go from $2800 for my old 90K mile transmission with a new case, to a new transmission with no miles for $2000. This car is going bye bye soon before it costs me another massive chunk of money. This is all such a shame since the transmission actually worked perfect all along

I don't think their giving you a new tranny, its probably a re-manufactured unit which is good, because they are a lot less prone to failure because of a different fluid path design. Look at it this way, your original tranny was gonna fail anytime and for 2k its a fair price. I have had friend who shelled out 4.5k for a new tranny. And all this is you to blame you broke the casing live with your mistakes.

Ouch, that sucks. Reminds me of when I first started working on cars with my friend and we forgot to soak the tranny drain bolt in my Integra. A chunk of the case around the drain bolt came off too, but it wasn't a huge crack, at least nothing JB Weld couldn't fix

Well, Im happy now. Its still hard to swallow forking out all this money. But as a good will gesture acura replaced my transmission for only 2 grand. Sure beats the normal price of $4700. Just picked up the car this afternoon, sure doesnt drive any different, my old one must have still had some life left. But now I have a new reman with a 3 year 36k warrenty. One less thing to worry about now.
