Post Manual TL Type S?

I just received a phone message today from my dealer that Acura will be coming out with a manual transmission Type S in the next six months. Has anyone else heard something similar?

I'm having a big debate with myself. 6-speed or auto??? GRRRRR. I'd feel so stupid for trading a car in after 6 months for the exact same car. But, dang... 260hp, 6-speed, headers and supercharger would kick BUTT!!!

I was BSing with a couple of the sales reps at my dealership and we came across this topic. They said that they haven't heard of any such rumors and both of them were doubtful of it happening. Honestly at this point I hope it won't happen...it's too late for me to switch over, and boy would I be jealous!

SlyTLS...

Don't worry about it. I have driven manual for a long time, now I switch over to automatic, I like it. Keeps your hand free...haha, use ss if you need to get busy.

But with manual, 260HP is going to be 260HP...

Like buying a computer, the next week, new stuff come out.. So, just have fun with your own car.

How about a 7-speed manual with a NSX like shift stick?

He's right. Autoweek confirmed that the TL type S will offer a 6 speed later this fall (I assume the next model year). I'm guessin 0-60 in 5.5-5.7 sec easy. Get rid of those bum tires, and the TL's got a strong case againts the 330i (problaby still out classed though). Thats my 2 cents.

Out classed by what, sir?
I wouldn't even get 330i if it costs less than TL-S as it is now, why would I even consider it if TL-S gets 6 speed?

My dealer said the 6 speed was a rumor and it wasn't coming at all , let alone in 6 months.

Can anyone validate this RUMOR ??

I don't want to flame, but... damn, man!!! What are you smoking? I've considered a 330, and getting a TL-S because of the price/value (and still getting a nice car), but if you love to drive, you can't put a TL-S next to a 330. I've had an M3 for three years now, and the new 330 is almost as good in handling characteristics (and better in some cases, now consider that M3 is the best, or one of the best handling cars in the world). It's perfectly balanced. The steering is a dream, though TL-S is very good too. The bottom line: The TL-S has more HP, is as fast in a straight, but in tight curves the TL-S is just barely adequate. And the brakes... well, they suck.

Sure, you can put new springs, tires, and breaks and get it closer to 330 in handling, but you'll never get there. And the upgrades will get you much closer to 330's price tag.

I really like the TL-S, and I am going to buy it (I have a baby due in two months, otherwise I wouldn't -- would go for something smaller and more fun).

Don't take it as a flame or an invitation for an argument -- just my humble opinion

By the way, if someone has done some OBJECTIVE analysis on handling improvements in a TL-S with different mods, I'd love to see that, along with prices. Beyond buying the TL-S my budget is very limited, and if I do get any upgrades, they'll be handling-oriented.

An addition to the previous posting: what's up with those shiny plastic buttons and handles around the steering wheel?!... I'll shut up now.

I think you should be considering another M3 .. I'm sure we're all humbled by your ownership of the '98 M3. Peace, we're all friends here. Oh, and I did read your "this is not a flame comment," so please don't throw that back in my face and ask me to "rethink" what I post.

Cool

Anyone heard anything further about the manual tranny? Any other publications (besides AutoWeek) reporting on it?

It would like to know because I plan on purchasing a TLS in the Fall, but would be willing to wait till Winter if that would be necessary to get a manual.

I am bleeding from your shots here, Peter . Fine, point taken. BMW has gotten ridiculous though. If you want to buy an M3 now, you'd have to cash out $60 grand, or 70, or maybe more -- blows my mind.

And Peter, I know, I was flaming. Apparently all I needed was a cold beer -- I am fine now, thanks for your concern

I must have done more mods on my Bimmer and owned it as long as anyone on the planet. There is a certain amount of fun to be had with RWD. It is fun to impress with perfect 4-wheel drifts and TV perfect Fangio-esque slides. All that said, the 330i/ci is cramped for big guys (I need to loose some weight, but I don't know of any surgery or other operations I would consider to shorten me). I love the fun factor of Bimmers, but the price [of the 330i/ci] is really 10k+ more with the "proper" wheels, suspension, etc.

On the other hand, if you want to suprise the sh*t out of yourself, just toss the horrible rubber on the TLS/CLS (I dumped my horrid MXM4s after 2-weeks). Every person I've given a ride with my Toyo T1S 235/45ZR17-97W* Proxies as been so impressed, that "blown away" is too understated. The last person I gave a ride had a CLS with sways, springs, etc, (but stock tires) and my car with sways and tires handles better (by far).

So, I don't think you will have as much fun as drifting a 330ci all over and the Acura's wheel wells should have been made wide enough from the factory to "engulf" the 235/45-17 or 235/40-18 rubber on 8+ inch wheels (kind of like the Bimmer's with plenty of room for wide wheels and rubber).

However, with that said, you can make a TLS/CLS as fast and handles close enough [to the 330], for 7K less, to make the driver of the car a bigger factor.

And that's all I know!

Headers, sways, realy light wheels, TIRES!

Cool

For a modest investment in mods, the TL-S will blow away almost every BMW, except the M, for thousands less. It's a no-brainer.

We've gotten kind of off the subject here, but put in my 2 cents toward the TL-S/330 debate. I don't think anyone could honestly say a TL-S would "blow away" a 330. Straight line performance of a 330 automatic may be a tad slower than the TL-S, 330 manual a tad faster. But on the back road twisties, the BMW is much more confidence inspiring and can make anyone feel like a hero. The TL-S just doesn't have that intangible quality. I love my TL-S and the way it drives and handles (it's certainly no pig) but it's no BMW. But for 10 grand less and room for my kids car seats in the back, I guess maybe it does blow away the BMW.
