The problem is its not hard to make it look good, its all in the prep work and wether it will last. If its not done right it wont look good for long

Agree! If you can do the prep work and take the car in ready just for paint, maybe you would get a longer lasting paint job. Maaco does not prep your car for paint, if they wash the old paint clean with some good ole soap and water is a stretch.

They paint right over your old paint and that's no go for the long run.

Maaco is place where you want to paint and sell your car the next day. I agree with your 3G paint job, but I think it should look a hella lot better. Paint has many factors. Prep work, masking, paint material, sprayer and guy spraying the paint. Many factors to consider. If you don't want to spend 3G's than get a 2 stage paint job. About half the price.

i wouldnt trust any other maaco. I only went to this one because I know the guy that works there. He also did a custom paint job on my friends 00 accord and so far the car looks as good as it did when he did it almost 3 yrs ago. I heard all those rumors about maaco also, but after watching my friends car I decided to just go and do it. But like i said i wouldnt go to any other maaco cause i know there reputation sucks

No offense, but do you even know what a 2 stage paint job is? how is that going to make it less than 3g?? A 2 stage paint Is a Basecoat clear coat paint, like what all TLs have with the exception of the WDP which is a Tri coat system

I think there is a lot of variance in Macco shops, so YMMV.

I have a 2nd car that is a 94 Toyota Camry. The original paint literally
fell off the car at about 8 years of age. It did not delaminate but faded
and oxidized very badly. I think the UV coat was defective.

I did not want to spent a fortune on it so decided to try Macco. Spent about
$1300. It's a mid level paint system. Two coats, A UV coat and clear coat.
That was about 2.5 years ago.

In short I am VERY pleased.

While it is not nearly as smooth as the original paint (there is some level
of orange peel) it seems to be more rugged than the factory paint. It is
warrantied for 4 years. It is more chip resistant than the original factory
paint too.

I think Macco get bad press ocasionally from the lower end paint jobs
they do. If you buy a $300 paint job it just isn't going to last.

My take is that the value is pretty good.

They do offer a "factory like" paint job that would have cost me another $1000
but I was actually talked out of it. I was told that while the mid level product
was not quite as glossy but would last longer. Seems to be true.

I also liked the fact that the paint that was applied was very representative
of the sample panel I was shown in the showroom. It actually came out a
bit better than the sample panel.

There was very little overspray. Only one mudflap had a tiny bit of paint on
it. Windows, trim, etc were clean.

I would use the shop by me again.

Hope this helps,

/Steve

Do yourself a favor and get a couple of quotes. One from Maaco and 2 or 3 other local shops and ask for references or to see examples of their work.

Going to Maaco is similar to using Dex III and Lubegard in your transmission- the cheapest way possible, not necessairly the best.

Wow seems like theres a lot of bad press, but sittinlow your car looks good! I live near you which macco did you go to? Could I get the name of the guy that works there so I could drop by and get a quote. From the looks of your car and what you say about knowing the guy that works there hopefully he would do as good of a job on my car as he did yours.

Let's be honest . . . it really matters what you need versus what you want.

Your 1999 TL-P with 150k on it would look nice with a quality paint job but does it really make sense to spend $2500? Even on a 2003 TL-S you better be planning to keep it for a long time if you are going to drop that much cash on paint.

Before my TL-S, I had a 1995 GSR. It was looking it's age after 9 years of ownership so I decided to have it painted. The local cheapo chain charged $500 to take out some dents, repaint with original color, and clear coat. Naturally, they broke my front Acura emblem and oversprayed . . . but what do you expect for $500.

Anyway, it looked great when I picked it up and even better after a couple of weeks. Too bad about the concrete that got splattered on it before it finished curing. The construction company cut me a check for $3000 to cover damages. A month later, the car hydrolocked in a storm . . . gotta love CAI. GEICO cut me a check for $6000 and I sold the car for $1500. I then bought a TL-S . . . well actually I purchased a 400hp WRX in between but that's another story.

Regardless of what you choose, go someplace that guarantees their work and make sure you know what that means before giving them cash $300 or $3000.

well to some spending the money to make the car look the way they want it is more important than how long they are going to keep it.

the same thing can be said about moding the car, its pointless to spend all that money moding it because you wont recapture the money, but yet we all do it. Its a matter of personal prefrence

If your getting rid of the car then I would take it to macco to have it painted. It comes down to who the prep and spray people are. If they don't have experience or knowledge in what they are doing it will always look like
