Loud Lifters Noise Problem

Anyone else ever have this problem before? When the car is started in the morning (and I live in Canada so its cold) its very loud but not as much once the car is running. This is not a major problem but it is very annoying, especially when I'm parked while still running the car and people walking by are wondering what the hell kind of noise it is, especially coming from a 99 TL.

Any feedback before I send it to the garage, and who knows how much they'll charge me for that.

Sounds like you need a valve adjustment.

i bet its not. its probably a loud FPR. many have that loud tick tick tick while sitting still (myself included when cold) and mine arent the lifters

My brother's car just had its lifters replaced, and the bill was like 900-some dollars. Good thing he had an extended warranty. It's a 2001 Mitsu Eclipse GT.

I guess we can't exactly tell what it is unless we heard it, but hopefully you won't need to replace the lifters like my brother did.

Hello fellow Ottawa TL'er...

Yeah it's been bloody J***s cold for that past 10 days..
but it's in this kind of weather where synthetic oils shine.
If you are using regular dino oil, I'm not surprised you have awful start-up noises.
Wondering when your last oil change was..? Use something like the new Mobil 1 0W20, it will help.
One of the many possibilities for your engine noise.

Yeah the weather is pretty bad these days, but its suppose to warm up a little this weekend.

Anyways, I just recently changed my oil at Camco Acura so I don't think it would have anything to do with the oil. I know when the oil gets dirty the engine gets a little loud.

I think this is a lifter problem and that it needs to be re-adjusted. I talked to a guy the other day and he specializes in japanese cars and he said that the TL have common problems like this and all it needs is an adjustment. It takes a couple of hrs. to adjust, so he says. I will be dropping the car next week so we'll see what they say.

So where abouts in Ottawa?

had the same thing.... my mechanic told me that to adjust or fix the lifters wouldn't be a cheap job... and reccomended adding a certain kind of oil to my current oil.. Lucas oil stabilizer ( I believe).. I got it at crappy tire it comes in a white 1L jug or a 1 gal jug.. I added the oil stabilizer and it worked great... most of the ticking is fixed... and it cost me 5 bucks.. now I wish I got the 1 gal this stuff is great and works everywhere.

After doing more research on this product I found it was great to add to all of your oil systems, power steering, oil, brake ( I think, it's on the bottle, the dilutions and the condition of engine new - old etc...) it conditions and rejuvanates the metal.. basically it works with the oil you are currently using and it is a reccomended step before going to the extent of fixing the lifters..

My lifters have been silent for months now.... I used to get so pissed going through the drive thru, because the sound would bounce off the wall and it would seem so loud.... now I hardly notice it, if it is there, all I know is it isn't loud enough to bother me anymore

Well this is very good information to know. I will stop by CT tomorrow and inquire a little about this product. I really hope this susbtance will fix the lifter noise problem and hopefully it'll go away by the time my appointment to the mechanic comes up.

There are no lifters on a OHC engine. Rocker arms ride on the lobes of the cams which in turn opens and closes the valves. If your mechanic is telling you to change the lifters, it's time to find a new mechanic.

Just because an engine has overhead cams doesn't mean it doesn't have lifters solid, hydraulic or otherwise. I've never pulled apart a j32, but I have pulled apart my share of 6G72's (Mitsubishi 3000gt) and that motor has 24 hydraulic lifters (and they constantly fail). Every VTEC honda motor I've pulled apart does not have hydraulic lifters so I would assume the J32 does not either. If you are having trouble with tapping, and the J32 is similar to other SOHC VTEC honda motors then you need a valve adjustment. It's not a difficult job to do. You can access the adusters by removing the valve covers. They are a part of the rocker arms. If you don't know what your doing then I wouldn't reccomend trying it yourself.

Actually I don't - didn't think I'd need any.

I'm not sure if you're confusing the lifters with the end pivot type hydraulic lash adjusters on the 6G72 DOHC engine. If I'm not mistaken this engine also utilizes roller rockers to increase the efficiency of the DOHC 4-Valve system.
And yes, some OHC engines do utilize lifters like Chrysler, Ford and Pontiac which are normally found on 4-cylinder engines.

My brother's car has a DOHC 3.0L V6, and he just had the lifters replaced.

Are you saying that they replaced something that don't exist on that engine?

Yeah so that's what everyone's telling me these days. So I took it to the mechanic today and he said its definetly a lifter problem and that its gonna cost me alot. He said he can't do that kind of work, its too extensive. He just told me to flush the oil, change it and add the Lucas stuff. I'm not sure if he knows what he's talking about so I'm gonna bring it to Camco Acura and we'll see that they say.

*Sigh*

Maybe I should trade it in.

Not lifters or valves

It's the timing belt tension pully. It's not giving your t timing belt enough tension.
