Limited Slip Differential

Does anyone know if a 2001 Acura TL-P has a limited slip differential?

I turned off the traction control and hit the gas on the salt covered streets in the Chicago suburbs and both front tires left rubber on the street.

I also jacked up the front of the car and couldn't turn the front wheels unless the transmission was in neutral.

Both of these situations indicate that I have a limited slip differential but I cannot find anything in the service manual that indicates if the differential is open or limited slip.

I purchased my Acura over a month ago used with 68K miles.

Apparently some are open and some are LSD-at least that was what I was told by the performance/tranny shop. Southern It's possible that you might have the LSD and if so you are the fortunate one, mine on the other hand was not-but it is now.

I believe only manual trannys have a limited slip, our cars have a lock-up torque converter. (I hope I didn't sound stupid by not knowing what I'm talking about).

I doubled checked - jacked the front of the car up and rotated one wheel - the opposite wheel turned in the other direction.
I have an open differential.

MikeTL-S: You are talking about two different components. The torque converter transfers power from the engine to the transmission gears. The differential transfers power from the transmission gears to the drive shaft.

they should all spin oppisit, even LSD's sld require slipping to transfer power to lock up the diff. on occasion our cars power will over come traction on both wheels and spin them both. i have left 50 foot 1 wheel wonder black marks and i have also left 25 foot 2 tire black marks. it all comes down to traction

After replacing my differential in my van with a limited slip I noticed that when you spin one wheel the opposite wheel spins in the same direction.

I didn't realize that the TL's power will over come traction and spin both wheels - thanks for your comments.

its most likely to happen going straight, but as soon as you get into a corner and jump on it you will more than likely get only 1 wheel to spin

it's that just the nature of all auto transmissions ... when you spin one wheel the other wheel spins in the opposite direction ... That is what putting the car in PARK does so your car wont roll away.

intresting..so thats how it works...i never realized that..i always thought there was some mechanism in the tranny that locked the driveshaft outputs

if putting the car in PARK locked your transmission then you would not be able to move the wheel at all. PARK is just another 'gear' that sets your wheel to rotate in opposite directions.

There is a parking "pawl" in your tranny that engages like a tooth on a wheel that's what keeps your car from rolling in P .

Now that its alive, how hard is it to put the phantom grip in the tranny? What would you have to take off the car to get to that area. I would lik eto do it when the tranny goes but so far the one they replaced under warranty is fine. The only thing is when they change the part that controlls the tranny they said it would shift harder and it does. I really want an LSD should I wait or try to do it myself. Not sure I trust any shops.

IF they even make one for our trans it will probably be expensive, 1000+ for just the LSD. (not really worth it unless you track the car) the 6 speed is a far better reason to spend that type of money.
To answer your question what needs to be done, you have to remove the trans and take the trans apart to install it.

So its not worth doing until the tranny is rebuilt? I thought you only need to unbolt the differential from the transmission. I guess its more involved. After I put the intercooler in, I think having the LSD will help keep it straight when pulling hard.
