LED trouble...

LED trouble...Ok so i just got the LEDs in the mail today. I also have my Type-S gauge cluster laying around so i decided to just try and put on the LEDs in the mean while..... but im having a little trouble.

The type 74 bulbs seem to be slightly bigger in diameter compared to the oem bulbs. I knew they would be a little bigger, i just didnt know it would be nearly impossible to put them on. I put some pressure and they fit the twist-off piece, but the Type 74 bulbs make the little piece open a little wider so when i try and twist it back on, it wont even go in the hole first. I got it in there with a lot more force than i was comfortable with. It felt like i was going to break the cluster . Is this normal? I mean, am i supposed to have this much trouble with all the LEDs im replacing on my cluster? WTFBBQ

I had this problem with installing a 74 LED into a shiftgate in the Camry. What you need to do is slightly pull the LED back out of the twisty thing. Just a little bit. It will make the thing twist and lock perfectly and still work fine.

I wouldn't risk fucking up your gauge cluster for 22 cent LED. Buy a smaller LED. 3mm LED's are small enough to fit most any factory application. Ebay has a huge variety of 3mm LED's. It's worth checking out.

I actually installed my LEDs in my guage today and had the same problem you did. However, if you put them in perfectly straight with a little bit of force, they will go in. The biggest problem I had was figuring out which ones were in backwards because I did this in the daylight and the LEDs are fairly dim. I ended up using a sunshade haha.

Did you fit the LED bulbs all the way down in that little plastic piece? I tried lining them up perfectly and then pushing it down but it feels like im going to break something. Im thinking about sanding down a little the two sides on that plastic piece that wont let it get through...

Yeah I pushed them all the way down, had to use plyers on some. Only problem is, a few of them cracked slightly (the bases not the LEDs), but they still work fine. I'm sure you could sand them down and that would help. I tried just pushing them in partially but they kept falling out of the bases. After fishing in my gauges for LEDs a few times I just said screw it and tried pushing them in all the way, it worked.

Only other piece of advice I have is don't be alarmed if your turn signals dont work when only the 3 odometer cables are attached. I panicked at this point but soon figured out that you have to connect the plug behind the hazard button (which makes sense) for them to work.

Overall I'm happy with the mod. They are a bit dim (which confuses me as LEDs are supposed to be brighter), but it's definitely better than the stock color.

I got mine from v-leds.com. Spent a total of about 30 bucks. I think I bought 14 white LEDs and 2 blue, so I had some left over.
