K&N Drop-in Replacement Air Filter?

I have a new 06 TL and am asking members of the 2nd generation TL that have been using the K&N drop-in air filter their experience with it. I believe your filter is the flat panel style like on the 3G. I hear in the 3rd generation section many strong opinions both positive and negative. The only negative is that more dirt is allowed to enter the engine. Is this true and does engine life actually suffer? I figure you guys have typically put more miles on your cars than the average 3G so you would probably have excellent first hand experience. Thanks. Steve

More dirt isnt getting into the engine. Ive been running one on mine for 200K with 0 issues. Any dirt small enough (and thats measured in microns)to get thru the filter wouldnt do any damage. Dont be worried about people saying that "dirt" gets thru and could ruin your motor, because they dont know what they are talking about

Thanks for the replies guys. I know the trucking industry has been using these for years, and I wouldn't think they would do anything to increase their costs.

like fsttyms1 said, those people are just talking out of their ass w/o any real knowledge. I have had a K&N or a CAI on this car for 40k total miles and everything is fine. And my dad has had one on his truck for over 150k miles. They are well worth the extra up front cost.

if you drive a lot of miles (like I do - 30,000+ per year), you just clean it annually and reoil. No problems up to 85K for me.

I just switched to a Comptech Icebox using the foam filter and am considering installing a K&N instead...

I noticed the car sounded a little more agressive but as far as it decreasing engine life, I don't think it does that.

I have an icebox with a K&N filter. I got tired of cleaning that foam one out every 8k miles. Now I go 30-50k without even touching the filter.

Works great as long as you don't over-oil the filter as this could foul the MAFS.

So how much oil do you recommend? Are you supposed to use the whole little bottle that comes with the recharge kit?

I've put K&N filters on every car I've owned:

1979 Toyota Corolla w/ dual-cam 2TG engine/dual Webers - 212k
1989 Acura Integra - 169k
1994 Toyota 4x4 - 85k
1997 Lexus LX450 - 155k
2003 Acura TL-S (CT IB with K&N) - 71k

Never had any problems with the K&N on any of these. They were all running fine the day I sold them (except the TL-S, which is a keeper ).

Any recommendations to purchase the filter. Kragen wants almost $50. I did find some online sites for about $38 and free shipping. Charge kits are anywhere from $10-$13. Any inputs will be appreciated.

To Billy Sacco,
If you're not familiar with reoiling, just clean the filter with the spray included with the kit (which turns it back to a white color), then spray with the K&N oil (lightly, just to re-color the filter red). The filter should not be dripping with oil, just coated on the filter surface.

Yeah I would soak em in liquid wrench overnight then go back and try again. Mine were in really tight too but some elbow grease got em out.

I just installed my K & N air filter, I immediately noticed a more aggresive idle noise, I took it for a spin around the block and it feels a little faster, and more aggresive, it was enough to make another car (3000 GT) rev his engine and floor his car. Now time for an oil change! the filter is bigger, and badder, and washable (my favorite part) great buy, i would reccomend this to anyone looking for stock upgrades! $35 shipped on ebay!

I replaced my stock air filter to a K&N 1-2 month ago and the moment I drove the car back to my place, it felt like my TL was breathing with 2 nostrils instead of one previously. I definetely noticed a slight difference. I would recommend this air filter to anyone!

my drop-in K&N is the only performance mod i've done so far and it's exactly what i wanted. the sound is almost unnoticable until about 4k rpm's and then it growls a bit better. the sound on start up sounds better too. but if you want loud, don't get the drop-in.

You can also remove the intake resonator, to get a better growl

Would this work in my airbox?

A quick question related to this thread, and I promise not to hijack......

My engine is a JDM 2.5L, but the box has AC6 on it. Is it the same as the US version ? If so, then I can get the same one. Thanks......

Odd how you all say it sounds better at different RPMS....

It should be a little louder all the way through, but especially when VTEC hits (which I belive is 5k on my car).

For the air filter, isn't ours a flat board-like shaped air filter? The link that I quoted looks like a CAI filter. I don't have any mods and I just want to replace teh stock air filter with a high reputable one which seems to be getting real good reviews.

If it isn't the one in teh link, can someone tell me the exact model number of the product I should get?

Where's the best site to get this filter at? Is Autozone alright?

How do you clean it? From my assumption from reading the posts from you guys, it's just wipe it down right? What's this with the oil? What does that do?

Lastly, how hard is it to replace the air filter? The last thing I wanna do is make some modification on the stock airbox for it to fit. does it fit perfectly into the stock setup?

I know it's alot of questions but I really appreciate it if someone could give me the answers to this. Thanks

What is an intake resonator? By removing it does void the warranty, will it damage anything?

How did you get the K and N cone to fit, as there is the sleeve where the icebox closes that increased the opening to about 5".

Its meant to resonate the sound to the intake, not sure about warranty but many have done it and no problems arise as of yet. When you take off ur bumper there is this big box held by two bolts right underneath the air filter box.

The link that MikePA has was for the K&N cone filter that should be used with the Comptech Icebox CAI. The K&N filter you want for your stock airbox is 33-2178, which you can get at most auto parts stores. AJUSA.com's price, including shipping for this filter is $40.50. I've found their prices better than Autozone, Napa or Baxters.

K&N makes a cleaning kit for these, which includes a cleaner and oil. The oil aids filtering and is necessary. It's very simple to replace the stock air filter with the K&N as they're the same dimensions.

I dunno why but that big box was pretty heavy.
