Question K&N Air Filter

Thinking about replacing my air filter with a K&N for my 03 TL-S. Can anyone tell me what, if any, performance gains I can expect by making the switch? Is there a true increase in hp and if so what will I notice during ordinary driving? Also, is there likely to be any increase in fuel mileage; and lastly, any negatives by making the switch that you can think of.....Thank for any help...

No negatives. you wont feel any gains. Im sure there may be 1 or 2 hp there but you wont feel them

As Kris said, no real performance gains (maybe a slight subjective gain when I first put it in- the 'butt dyno')- the major benefit is that you don't have to buy any new filters. I clean mine every 25K or so. You will need a recharge/ cleaning kit which is generally < $20. I noted a slight gain in mileage- I generally get 25-26 mpg with regular driving. I would recommend getting one. Autobarn.com sells them as does AJUSA.com:

http://www.autobarn.com/cks/newlooku...ame=AIR+FILTER

http://www.ajusa.com/cgi-bin/knfilte...e50cf71d34b11d

Both links above are for the non Type S, but both vendors have them for the Type S

Really, no appreciable gains? I was hoping to perhaps feel a little more throttle response by switching - this is just a fantasy?..........

Just a fantasy. If you were to get a Comptech Ice Box or a AEM you would be more inclined to notice a gain

Thanks for responding, guys..............My last two posts ended up being a couple of big bagels..................Is the Ice Box the least expensive way to squeeze a little more out of our cars?

I just checked out their website. As you know I don't know a thing about cars. Do you know how much these are and what's involved in replacing mine with these? Also, I've heard they might cause problems down the road - is this correct?

Prices are on the UR site. You remove the belt, unbolt the OEM pulley, bolt on the new one and replace the belt with a slightly shorter one. No, they do not cause problems. The UR site also has the installation instructions.

^^^Pretty much sumed it up. Excelerate (a vendor on this site can get it for you).
Not that hard of a install for a mechanic, slightly harder for the DIY'er due to the bolt being on hard, and needing a puller. Price should be under 200.

Its lighter. its less mass on the engine and produces more hp. Gains check their site, they have a dyno, but all members said they were able to feel the difference. Only disadvantage is if you plan on having a Huge stereo, due to its underdrive size it doesnt produce enough voltage at low rpm for the alt.

Thanks, Kris. UR's website claims a 13hp increase - that's quite a bit....... I would think too that if there's less drag on the engine that MPG would also increase - does this sound right? Maybe a dumb question, but I doubt that the dealership wants to get involved in this kind of mod. Since I'm not a DIY'er, guess I'd have to know someone to help with kind of thing?

You wont lose hp from mods (unless your out flooring it to see the gains)
As for not being a DIY-er y not? If you dont think your dealer will install it find a independent mechanic to do it

Maybe my dealer would install them. I just figured they weren't cool about encouraging mods..........I would try to do some of this stuff myself but, umm.....................I need my car to actually get me from point A to point B, if you know what I mean..........
