Just got 02 TL-S
Just got 02 TL-S
Hey guys just checking in. I just purchased an 02 type S last week. I have always been a Nissan/Honda guy and have owned 3 maximas in and an Accord in the past. I was actually in the market for another Maxima and came across this car. I have to say I was pleasently surprised and impressed with the car. It seems very nimble and and solid. You can definately tell that it is well put together. I think that I am really going to enjoy this vehicle. I also have an 06 Titan which I love. If anyone is in Wisconsin, let me know. I am looking forward to navigatiing through the site... looks to have plenty of info.
Congrats. I still feel new to this site because I continually learn more every day.
FYI, there's a Chicago meet coming up in April, and some Wisconsin guys are coming down.

Yeah, I have been noticing that there are quite a few mentions of tranny issues/threads on here. I am taking it that it is the weak spot of this car?? How long do they typically last? what should I look out for? Thanks guys.
Tranny's durability varies. I've heard if you do alot of highway driving, it heats up the transmission and it eats away one of the clutches. If I remember right, the problem is caused by the chewed up pieces blocking fluid outlets causing fluid to not reach a part. Then, KABOOM, its gone.
D5 will flash in the guage cluster and it will not go into gear. The green flash of death.
Some experience symptoms, some don't. I think member ChrisQ1980 said his tranny went without any warning. It shifted fine, car was smooth and still fast, then went to go to work the next day and it was gone.

^the oil not getting to the 2nd and 3rd gear clutch packs is actually a design flaw i believe

you are just like me, a maxima/TL guy. My father and my combined past cars are an 00 maxima GLE, 00 maxima SE(my first car), 03 TL-P, 02 TL-S(my current car), and 05 Maxima, haha... when i got my tl-s i was in the market for an 03 maxima, but i came across my ABP (same color as you) and had to have it. IMO cant go wrong with either car though. congrats
my trans went after owning it for 3 months at 70k and i believe that was the 2nd tranny in the car... check to see if your trans has been replaced after feb 2005, thats supposedly when they really fixed the tranny problems we have. ive had a post feb 2005 tranny since october 06 and put about 40k miles on my car since then with not 1 issue.

Allen, you are correct, mine was perfectly fine until the morning it failed. Couldnt make it the 8 miles to the dealership. Some say that stop go driving does it, for me I was 95% highway driving, then on occasion stop/go traffic. I think it's a combination actually, but nobody is sure.

All i have to say is this car is very damn reliable, only flaw the tranny. Id still consider this car more reliable then other cars out there even with the tranny flaw present.
I had maxima, 300zx, sentra, 200sx nothing but problematic. my datsun and 280z did last forever. either nissan or infinity is not on my list. their parts are so poor, low quality. the mufflers fall apart after 4 years. I am sure they are better now, but I am not takin a second chance. They claim to have the best engine, but the engine wont take you anywhere if everything else fail. One time the datsun water pump failed on freeway, got it tow to a gas station, call the parts store nearby, the guy delivered the part, and I was able to fix it with my simple socket 10 and a rachet.
