Junkyard Experience

I found a local junkyard that has a sunroof so that I can replace mine. I don't have any experience dealing with junkyards but he told me that it would cost $250. My question is can I haggle with him or is that a set price? I can buy a brand new one for $260 but of course I would have to pay shipping. Do you guys think it's worth it?

I think I would just buy the new one and forget the junkyard. I didn't know that sunroofs held their value that much (I suspect they don't, really). My 2 cents, FWIW...

I figure that's pretty high for a used one to. I am sure they set it high and see if they can get someone that doesn't really know much to buy it. I'm gonna go down there and see how much I can haggle with him and show him that I can get a brand new for $10 more. One of the studs that's welded to the sunroof snapped. I asked the dealer to fix the rattle coming from my sunroof when I lived in Texas because I had brought it in for some warranty work. Well, it seems to me that the snapped the stud in half because the other half isn't floating around in there at all. So now I am looking for a new one so I can finally get that damn rattle to go away.

If its welded to the roof, how is replacing the moonroof going to solve it?

I meant to say welded to the moonroof. It's the stud that holds the moonroof to the frame. If you take off the black plastic cover on the side of the moonroof you will see the 2 studs with the nuts on them. That's what I need to replace ultimately but I couldn't see anyother way to do it besides replacing the whole moon roof. If you look at it let me know what you think. Maybe there's an easier way that I haven't though of.

I'm just talking theoretically here because I've never torn into my moonroof, but from what you said, there's a bolt that's welded to the moonroof frame, which secures the unit to the car frame (roof)??

If that's the case, can't you just have a shop weld a new bolt on, or you could probably even drill into the moonroof frame (where the bolt was originally welded to) and use a new bolt? Just a thought. 250 bucks for a used one out of a junked car sounds awefully expensive when a new one is 260 plus shipping. I've gone to junkyards before looking for parts for my friends' cars and it's always negotiable unless it's a BIG junkyard that's automated/computerized with set prices.

Figure 11 is where the studs are welded to. It's a metal frame that goes around the glass. I haven't pulled the moonroof off yet to see if I can remove the frame from the glass to access the bolt but even at that point, the frame that goes around the glass is not listed on this page. I am sure that if I were able to get frame off, that I would be able to make something work. It's a little hard to explain but if you were to look at your car, I think it would make a little more sense. And actually on acuraautomotiveparts.org, the part is only $247.10, so I am definitely going to do some haggling with the junkyard if I go that route.

Man, what if someone died in that car from an accident. I would not want any interior parts from that.

I think the sunroof would be okay...but that's morbid.

So at a junkyard the price/cost is just arbutrarly set depending on the item/condition when you pay for them?

Tell that junkyard dog that his price is too high! Really, I can't see a used sunroof being worth more than half of the new price - so in this case $130. But it might be worth more than that to you given your current situation. I would say that if the price he wants after negotiating gets within $100 of the new roof, then get the new roof. If he'll do it and you'll still have more than $100 in your pocket vs. new, then get the used roof.............. Let us know how it turns out...
