Installing a alarm.

Hey guys, I have a question. My girl just bought me a Viper 771XV alarm from best buy. When she called to get it installed they told her that they need an extra key to install the alarm? Is that right? Why would you need to install a key to get the alarm working? If that is the case what is the point of having a alarm if the key is already in the car? Can someone give me the reason for this? Thanks!

Our keys have an immobilizer chip inside of them. There is a sensor within the car. If the sensor does not sense the chip, the car will not start. An automatic car starter needs the key to be within range in order to work, so that's why they put an extra key in a hidden location so that the sensor sees it. They also sell a unit that tricks the sensor into thinking the key is there, but I forgot what it is called.

Does it mean that thieves can buy these units to steal our cars by tricking the sensor too ?

It gets wired to I'm guessing the security system, and I think it some how remembers the signal that the key has and replicates it. So I guess if someone has the time, know-how, and capability to wire in this device, plus has the code of the original key, they may be able to do it? But as you can see it's probably pretty time-consuming and unlikely.

I'm sure you've had it installed by now but what they do is either put the Key in a radio transmitting box, or wrap a 18 gauge wire around the key about 5 times then wrap the rest of the wire around the ignition to trick the car into thinking the key is in the ignition. The only hazard this poses is if the thief makes it into your car and then can hunt down where the key is hidden. The key can be hidden anywhere they just need to make sure the wires going to the ignition are well hidden or blended in. Also what I do when hiding this key grinding off the teeth so it cand turn the ignition. The hidden key should always be hooked to a relay so its invisible to the cars ignition system unless the remote start is activated.

i prolly wouldnt take it back to that shop. they are either 1 lazy. or 2 idiots because if this was purchased laltely then they have the new xk modules. they are prolly wanting to use the 556u and this is the universal bypass module. and yes you lose a key. WE take that key and with permission from owner grind down the key to make it unusable and install it into the 556 module. this is the most basic and semi fool proof install to get the job done, kinda like a last resort when other options are unavailable.

the new xk modules and off the top of my head i believe you need the xk05 will not require you lose a key. they just take a bit of time to install and program.

you never want a lazy person to install your security set ups. youll be asking for trouble.

make sure they run your factory "un-arm" w/ no unlock or youll be back because your factory alarm will go off everytime you remote start the car.

hopefully this helps a bit and good luck, if you purchased it from bestbuy then you have already paid for the basic labor. if you dont feel comfortable then take it back and return it and purchase it again from another store, just dont take it to another store to have it installed without returning it, we dont make commission but it fucks with our numbers and pisses the installers off.

Grinding down the teeth off the key won't do much to prevent thieves from starting the car. The key point to this factory immobilizer is to stop the PCM from generating any timing signals to operate the engine, because Honda knows that the ignition switch is extremely easy to defect. Simply rip off the steering wheel column cover and all wires are expose to plain sight. Need I say more.

yes you are correct. never did i say that it will keep anyone from starting anything. security systems and their componants are used to slow a theif down. they will never prevent them from stealing it. grinding the teeth down on a key will keep the average retard from stumbling apon this and trying anything. the object is to hide all wires properly so that this doesnt happen as well.

also using the xk module you will not have to worry about a key at all is the point i was trying to get at. average thief will go after older cars to catch them a new fancy ride. they go for the goods inside the vehicle instead.

but this is besides the point. the viper or any directed units are very nice units and with PROPER installation will keep your mind at a bit of an ease and using the r/s features and any additional feature will just make you that much happier. and with the 2 way pager system, if your within reach they wont have time to mess with anything because your keypad will alert you of such. (just remember to take the safety off the pistol) jk

good luck with your new system.
