Installed 02 tails with red bulbs-results

Folks:

FYI, i've installed 02 tail lamps on my 00 TL. Tried using red bulbs for the turn signals, looks ok without any sunlight hitting it. However, with the sunshine on the tails, i can't see anything except for the size of the blinking red bulb. In other words, no glow at all. Reverted back to using yellow bulbs with clear tails.

Now, i didn't have any 7440 red bulbs, so i used a red 7443 which is double filament, with the second filament contacts cut, to simulate single filament bulb. There was no wattage rating on the bulbs or the packaging. It's those red bulbs from APC.

Has anyone tried using 7440 red bulbs which as 21w rated? Is is bright enough during the day with sun on the tails?

thx

Well, i paid $5 for a pair of those APC bulbs, and they're just not useable during the day with sun on tails. Just to confirm, your red bulbs look good and you do get a red glow during the day with the sun hitting em?

Thnks for your help, if they're absolutely good for you during the day, i'll get your bulbs.

Sam,

Didn't the tails come w/ lights when u got them? BCInspire got the '02 tails and his light was bright enough during the day! I know this cuz I followed him for abit from our Vancouver/Seattle meet. It was bright orange.

By the way, which dealership did ya get it from? How much?

Alex:

I got the 02 tails from Revolution Motorsport in Richmond. Speak to Cyrus Wong and tell him i referred you. I told him if he did a good job, he'll have more business. I paid $360 CDN total, excluding taxes. If you were to call the dealers yourself, they'll charge you $400 for the same tails. We didn't bother getting the 02 harness as a simple electrical tape job will hold your current 99-01 turn signal bulb socket in the 02 turn signal holes. Now, it takes about 1 week for the tails to come in. Cyrus' crew will install them for you in about 30 to 45 minutes. But make sure you buy some amber bulbs yourself first to replace the current clear ones for the turn signal. Give the bulbs to Cyrus and he'll install them. I got a pair of Skylite 7440 amber for $15. BTW, they dont sell these bulbs at Canadian Tire. I got them off this performance shop in Surrey, i think it's called "Mospac" on King George Highway, across from the Canadian Tire near 72nd Ave. The problem i had with red bulbs was that i couldn't see them glow at all with sunlight on the tails (too weak, wrong wattage?), so i had to use yellow bulbs (rated 21w). If you can't find 7440 amber, get a pair of 7443 double filaments, but cut off the two inside contacts on the bulbs to simulate a single filament bulb. Anyway, using the cheap APC red bulbs, it also glowed a bit "pink" or "raspberry" in color, which i didn't like too much. Maybe i'll try polarg red ones to see if they're better.

Oh, and as BCInspire says, the only legal rear blinkers in BC are amber/yellow or red. Also, the 02 tails when purchased dont come with any bulbs, unless you buy them too. I suggest you keep your current harness and get amber 7440 bulbs, and just tape it up for use with your new 02 tails. It works great.
