No, it has to do with the light emitted, not the diffuser.
Orange or Red: turnsignals
Red: Brake
White: Reverse
Think about all the cars that have clear OEM sidemarkers (BMW comes to mind)
The bulbs could be clear so long as they emitt the correct color when illuminated.

Seems like we have an arguement here... Can someone provide hard evidence to prove that no orange reflector is OK?
Oh, and NSXnext, to my knowledge, all BMW's DO come stock w/ orange corners (look at some pictures if you doubt me).

i have been pulled over plenty of times, and i even pass inspection. as long as my bulbs emit an amber light i'm fine. i'd imagine you'd be ok as long as you have orange bulbs.

I was thinking about all the cars that have OEM cleared lights. As long as the light blinks amber, your legal.

Yes, there are cars that have completely cleared headlights, with just an orange bulb for turn signaling, but ALL these cars also have an orange reflector somewhere else on the front of the car (example: 350z, g35, 911 turbo). I've just spent the last 15 min looking for a car that has ABSOLUTLY NO ORANGE REFLECTOR on the front end of the car, and couldn't find anything. Theres got to be some reason why all manufacturers put the orange reflector on the front end of the car...
yup. the e46 coupes have a clear corner lens because there is an orange reflector on the bumper. this is why it's legal. but check any US car. orange reflector somewhere on the front corner of the car (not necessarily the headlight) and red reflector on the rear corners. for example, 6th gen honda accord coupe has a red reflector on the side of the rear bumper.
the law concerns the reflector color. inherently "clearing" a housing would be in violation.

To quote California law:
25803.
(b) A vehicle shall also be equipped with an amber reflector on the front near the left side and a red reflector on the rear near the left side. The reflectors shall be mounted on the vehicle not lower than 16 inches nor higher than 60 inches above the ground and so designed and maintained as to be visible during darkness from all distances within 500 feet from the vehicle when directly in front of a motor vehicle displaying lawful lighted headlamps undimmed.

Since the state vehicle laws come from the DOT, I assume similar in all states. I tried finding it on the DOT website, but no luck. So basically, you gotta have the ugly orange reflector in the front facing sideways and the red in the rear facing sideways. There's also stuff about needing a rear facing red reflector somewhere.

I thought ur front reflector can be amber or white? I cleared my headlight and put super whites bulbs on for about a year now and never get hassle by cops. maybe im just pusing my luck dont know but i have drive by cops too they just never pull me over.
Usually cops don't know about the front/rear orange/red reflector law. As you can see from the responses, it's a confusing law.
Most of the time, cops pull you over for Alteeza (however you spell them) because they instantly think clear is illegal regardless of the reflectors. People also swap out the orange bulb in the rear turns for white ones, and those are obvious giveways to cops when you see a road full of red lights and one white blinker.

just look at the lexus truck their tales r comp clear but the have 2 red relectors in the bumper and they r fine w a clear corner and an orange bulb the average cop wont bust u but u get a cop u wants 2 be a pain...then u get busted
Same...as long as u dont put super blue crap on the side marker. Also..make sure that your rear turn signal is lighting up Yellow or Red..becoz cops will definitely pull you over for that if it were blue or white. The fronts they don't really care about.
in NYC, most cops dont care. its such a common thing and they have other things they need to worry about. HOWEVER, once you cross into crackhead states like Jersey, Dela, Conn, Penn, MD...your a sitting duck and i can almost guarentee a problem. i know alot of you guys are from those states but that has been my experience. when i first moved to MD, i got pulled over every day comming home from work by the same officer who everyday gave me a warning. eventually i gave in and changed my bulbs to amber( they were hyper white)
In nyc, you wont have a problem not having the orange reflector in there. dont wrorry about it
