Wink I hate using SS!!!

The only reason why I hate using it is because I can only go up to 2nd and ill be doing around 65; so after that ill just put it back to D5 because damn I hate Florida Cops!!!

I just love the SS because when your in 2nd gear and your about at 3000 rpm, It just feels like you have soooo much power just at your pedals, like if you gas it, it will lurch forward so much and soon enough your hitting 60's...

I really don't understand what you're saying. The point of SS is not so you can run into red. 2nd gear, 65mph runs the engine very hard and is near red line if not all the way in. Why would you do that? Here's an idea... take the car 4K rpms and shift. Don't take offense to this, it's only for the good of your car. Take care of it especially with those phat rims you just got today.

i like SS cause i can downshift and slow down without using the brakes. its a good thing when you pass a cop, if he sees you press the brakes he knows to pull you over. this way you downshift and automatically slow down

That means that our 99s do not automatically shift from 1st to 2nd gear. But we only have 4. Hey Acura3200, shift at 4k rpms? C'mon man you gotta enjoy it a little more than that - it won't break...I promise

I love the SS! In my case, I drove Nissan Z cars and other manual transmissions for years, and the one thing I always missed in my Legends ('91 4 door, '94 coupe) was the ability to control the engine and avoid the break pedal in many cases. The overall control of the vehicle is so much different with a stick, but if you've never really lived with one then I guess Sport Shift would be kind of hard to fully appreciate.

Now, with the '01TL, I've got the best of both worlds and let me tell you, I love the freedom it gives me in L.A. I drive a lot of canyons and winding highways where SS is ideal. Its also great in L.A. traffic because I can stay off the break pedal. But for freeway driving, or driving around town, the Automatic 5 SPEED kicks the sh*t out of the '99 TL with its 4 speed. Smooth at all times, and very happy to rev low at 90 MPH.

Lastly, there is no reason to have to shift from first to second in SS mode, so I'm glad I don't have to. And I would never want to down shift to first gear, so once again I'm better off not having to worry about accidentally downshifting too far, or redlining in first geat off the line. That's something I would have hated in the Volvo S60 or the Audi A6.

My reasoning seems incontrovertible to me, but I'm interested to know what others think.

I don't know why there would be any debate among ex-stick shift owners.

Hey- I get an average 16.1 mpg... do you really think I follow my own advice? Plus, I'm getting the full Comptech setup (will be here today). It's only going to get worse!!

I heard it's bad to downshift to slow down instead of using your brakes. Everyone does this, but it's really bad for your car. Would you rather repair your crankshaft and clutch or your brakes. Cost a lot less for brakes if you ask me.

You live in Texas. You don't get snow. When you're coming down a hill with all that snow and slush on the ground, engine braking is your best friend.

BTW, I'm part of the 99 club too.

The SS is freakin fun!!
I use it all the time. Since I have to use the auto with all this sorry bayarea traffice, its nice to open it up alittle a take off with the SS. Feels like more power!

Gotta be careful with it though, sometimes it gets too fun and before you know it, your're at 95 in a 45 zone.. good thing I was using SS, just down shifted and the cop never knew the difference. Luck too I guess..

A manual tranny is way better, at least for those who know how to drive one correctly, but for the TL, I like the SS. It is better than a full-on automatic where you cannot control any of the shift points. What? The 00&01's shift automatically between 1&2? Bummer. I guess I like my 4 speed just fine. I must be a control freak!!! .

I don't know where you hear that, but you've got me curious. Why would downshifting with SportShift, which is designed for downshifting as well as upshifting, be harmful? Acura would be paying for a lot of warranty repairs if this were true, right? So, why would they continue to build the SS version of the transmission if it is likely to break????

Please enlighten me!

Think about it like this:

How much is it to replace brake pads?
How much is it to replace a transmission?

Which do *you* want to go out first?

Though I think occasional engine braking is fine, doing it at every stop is going to cause some extra wear.

thats not the point of why i downshift instead of braking. Downshifting on a regular tranny would **** it up, but the reason for the SS is so you can control your gears and downshift and upstift under your control, anything harmful to the tranny in SS, the tranny would prevent you from doin it. The reason i downshift instead of braking sometimes is to be inconspicuious when cops are around.
