How "Smart" is Our Transmission Programming?

I remember when I first got my car (I bought it new in 2003), the salesperson and the service manager told me that the ECU adjusted for driving style...

That depending on how aggressive or passive I drove in the first few hundred/thousand miles, that the transmission shift points would adjust to your driving style... And that you can also "reset" the learning of the ECU by disconnecting the battery, and have it "relearn"...

Haven't really given it much thought, but for some reason, the conversation came to mind today and thought I'd ask this community for confirmation on whether this is true, or urban myth...

Its not about of being adjusted to your driving style but indeed its "Smart".
Our transmission has the ability to hold gears by how much you are pressing the gas pedal. Basically it works like this.
If you hold your gas pedal to about 10% your trans will get the usual 2K RPM Shift point.

If you hold your gas pedal to about 25% your trans will hold gears to about 3K! in each gear!.

But this isn't something new (This is actually a very old system going back to the "TV CABLE" (Throttle Valve Cable). The difference in our ECU trans is that the trans can also take load into consideration when holding gears. For example:
If you hold your gas in 10% but you are going up hill the Grade Logic will automatically kick in and hold gears longer anyway. But if you are pressing gas about 25% the RPMs will also shoot higher. But load can also be the amount of weight being carried (Full passengers or full luggage in flat ground)

This is how almost every Auto Honda works since 199X.

What the ECU RELEARN when you unplug the ECU is the O2 Sensors Normal Values.
The ECU takes a little while to store the 02 Usual driving with your usual Local Gas and store this values each day.
If you use normally 93 octane (Good Gas) usually and some day you use cheapo 86 (Cheap gas) the 02 Sensor reading and Timing in the engine will be very different. The ECU will auto-adjust to that in a matter of miles because if already has the previous 02 sensor readings to compare. But when you unplug the battery is learning all again! and it takes a little longer to do so.

don't have to remove batt neg cable to reset the ecu- which then requires the entry of radio code

simply remove the CLOCK fuse on passenger side interior fuse panel for 1 minute and reinsert = DONE

now drive how you like, small changes in shift points may occur over the next few weeks, but it wont turn into a race car~

NOTE the example given above says 93 and 86 octane of differing fillups
DO NOT use less than 91..no excuses

Thanks. Speaking of radio codes... I have been inflicted with the dreaded problem of my radio not accepting the valid radio code (drained battery dry a few week ago). Haven't had the time to yank the antenna cable from the back of the headunit to get this working again

optional radio method is go to an underground/multi level parking structure--maybe a shopping mall near you?
park low as possible so antenna has no view of the sky
Enter radio code

all else fails yank the antenna lead and enter code

You are certain this is the correct code- have used it before
would not be the first to have a replaced unit

What fun when I found the nav had been warranty replaced..... and no one ever wrote down the new code!!

Yes...I am sure it is the right code... I used it successfully before...and I also have it printed from the material that the dealership gave to me...

I ended up taking the center console apart this afternoon and yanking the antenna from the head unit... SUCCESS!!!

I did hear about the workaround of going into a subterranean parking garage and entering it from the lower bowels of the parking complex... If I was conveniently going to be in one of these parking structures, I would probably have done it instead...

But it was a lot easier for me to just take apart the center and take care of it in my garage...

I hope I don't have to do that often...

For reference, Palo Alto city hall, lower level, works well. And I suspect just about anywhere in Death Valley.

Well, that would fix the radio. But then you'd be tempted to eat your way through Grant and Stockton.
