Work out your biceps and forearms, because it take a heck of a twist to get the thing off.

No..I tried that and it didn't work for me on my old '99. Go to your local Home Depot and buy a can of "Graffiti Remover" (White Bottle). Soak it in there for about 3-5 minutes..and the outer layer should easily be removable/wiped off. Make sure you don't get the Graffiti Remover substance on your hands..as it will burn.

This is from my '99 TL..

-First gotta take off that plastic ring around your shiftplate..
-Then take off your shiftknob (Turn counter-clockwise)
-Then take off your shiftplate...you either gotta pull it to the left or right to unhook your shiftplate..don't quite remember.
-After that, use the "Graffiti Remover" to chrome it out.

Yes, mine looks just like it...just soak it for like 30 seconds or so, that was plenty of time. After that, just wipe it off with something - it does kinda burn your hands though...no biggie.

I think the '99 is the only 4 speed...if thats the case, then no cause the other models are 5 speeds.

Yup no need to post, i did what ill*TL and OU SIG and it came out just like the pic posted above (exept i dont have that hole to the right side of the gate, i put piece back on) ...this is the cheapest/fastest mod so far...takes 5minutes to remove gate (if you dont know what your doing==>me),1 to remove paint and 1 to put it together.

total cost =$5.07 for spray can w/tax! and 7minutes.
