Post how long should brake pads last?

for the average driver....

i mentioned that i get a slight vibrations when braking from high speeds to the dealer. i have 49,000 km's on my car (how many miles is that?) and they told me they had 40% of the pads left. he said thats the problem. they threw some crazy prices at me so i said id let it ride for another month

does that sound right? 49 thousand km's? my toyota went until 60K

mr tl, if you have vibrations when braking, its probably your rotors. They are probably warped. I have the same problem, with 31,000 Miles on my odometer. The dealer said, because I drive short distances, 4 miles to and from school, twice a day, five times a week, I stop more than the average driver. This wears the brakes more than 50 miles of highway driving a day. If you drive short stop and go distances, its probably normal. We used to replace our brakes in our honda every 50,000 miles. That car was driven mostly on the highway.

Hey MR TL, If it IS your rotors, I have my original rotors which were perfectly fine when I changed them to the drilled ones that tim sells. (which is actually stock rotors drilled out) I could probably be convinced to package them and send them to you since you set me up before. Email me if you need them. If its your pads, upgrade to the Metal masters and you'll be set.

If you're abusing your breaks then I could defidently see them wearing out that fast. Is that a Acura dealer that you took it to? Get a second opinion if you don't whole heartedly trust the dealer.

Someone on this site (Einstein?) once mentioned that holding the brakes down after using them heavily can warp your rotors because the area of the rotor that is under the brake pad doesn't cool off as fast as the rest of the rotor. Might want to watch that after stopping hard, roll ahead slowly.

yeah, i took einsteins advice on the rotors

it was an acura dealer, i'll bring it to another dealer to see what they say. and i'll have them guarantee that it will fix the vibration problem

ed, i'll think about your rotors when i see what another dealer tells me

thanks

mr tl, I agree that the vibration is probably caused by slightly warped front rotors. Many people here have reported this problem, and "on the car" machining by the dealer will fix it ($CND159 at Sherway). I believe that since it is a common problem (TSB 86-014) Honda Canada may cover it under goodwill. I recently complained about the same thing, and am expecting a call from them.

Also, I think the dealers are often over-conservative on pad wear. They probably meant 40% of allowable service life, which is like 80% of the pad. In other words, you have more than 1/2 of the pad left. Since we have easy access to check the pad thickness, keep using the old ones and check them once in a while.

Good luck,
Alex
