how high do you REV when you accelorate?

Hey guys I was wondering how high do you REV your engine when you accelorate? I normally go 2 or 2.5 some times 3 if I really need to (rarely), would it damage the car if I go higher? Would it cause more wear on the engine if I rev 3 or more all the time?

You're not going to damage the engine unless you exceed the redline on a missed shift. The rev limiter prevents you from overreving. 3000 isn't going to wear the engine...Honda engines are high revving motors...they like to be revved up once and a while. Take it near the redline and see how it sounds....it's sweet!

Are you saying you only rev to 2500 rpm normally?
The VTEC extra power mode doesnt even come on till 4700
So you can run it to 6000 all the time if you want- it wont care
Use good oil and filter and change regularly

Thanks for the info guys!

I'm always afraid of wearing out the engine if I rev too much and yes I do oil and filter change every 3 months =)

If it was going to hurt the engine to go higher honda wouldnt have designed it to ref to refline in the first place. Floor it a few times and see how much fun it is. You wont hurt it

I redline my car all the time. This is my 4th Honda (Acura) and I have never had any problems. Thats why the Vtec has never failed. There the leading class of engines.

hey man how could you resist the temptation of flooring it and rev it to the redline? Anyways, you kept it under 2- 2.5k rpm...how did you do that? I find that I usually rev it to 3k a lot of the time, when there's not too much traffic around.

You're 24 years old, have a Type-S and you ask this question? Was your last car a bicycle?

From this moment forward, you are offically banned from driving this automobile. Once you have read and understood the owners manual ( ), your driving priviledges will be restored.

Here in Vancouver you can't keep the RPM below 3000 going uphill without making yourself a roadblock.
Good thing you live in Toronto.

I try to hit VTEC at least once a day! Got to make sure the cams don't freeze up from lack of use. The only time I shift at 2,500 is when I'm stuck behind a minivan.

In normal driving the car shifts wherever it wants. When I want to have fun it's redline for each gear. I do this often.

hmm, might i suggest adding 3oz of acetone to your tank before filling up which is what i've been doing for the past 9 fill ups and on average with shifts at 5-6k mostly city driving I get 360miles or 580kms (i'm in canada) until the fuel light goes on.

Check out http://www.pureenergysystems.com/new...00069_Acetone/
for more information

I was skeptical before but now with an engine that consumes less fuel, smoother acceleration and idle, i'm pretty much sold on it.

oh i should mention that i replaced the air filter with a k&n square filter in the box, been using Pennzoil full synthetic & k&n oil filter, took out the spare tire, maintain tire pressure at 30psi all around and running on sparkplugs with about 5000kms - i have 138000kms on the engine too

i'm usually on 2000 rpm at the shift because my TL eats a ludicrous amount of gas.

i've never done acetone, but i've used the fuel injector cleaner stuff, and driving mostly below 2000 rpm i've managed 260 miles on 12.8 gallons of gas with 70% highway....wtf, is this normal?

Buddy are you serious? shift at 5-6k, city driving, and getting 580km?? I live in Canada too (Vancouver), where can I get acetone?? My car also has around 130000km on it, and k&n drop in filter. I also just used Quaker State fuel system cleaner a few weeks ago (since I can't find seafoam here).

I'd happy if I could get 580km before the light comes on for mixed driving.

well 5-6k shifting in the city is an exageration, but i do wind it up once in a while to hear the new sounds from my engine after yanking that beastly resonator..

i pick up a big can on acetone at the CDN Tire, it's ~ 946mls for $7+taxes - just don't get it on your paint, it will fade or strip it eventually if not washed off asap..

yea you might get lucky finding a source in bellingham or ask around the marine dealers about the Seafoam, if you're paying over $10/can you're getting burnt a bit

i tried using 92octane from Husky/Mohawk, but it dropped my mileage on the last tank to 520kms/tank.. It's mentioned in that website that lower octane gives better results.. So far, 91oct. @ Shell has given me 570kms and 8 fill ups at Mohawk/Husky at 90oct averages 560-580kms higher if i keep my tach under 3k especially on the hwy

let us know how you fare with your mileage if you try it out

thanks for the info. Before I put that stuff in my car, I just want to make sure that it will not destroy the plastic/rubber stuff in my car, as mentioned in that website. I think it says something like the acetone when mixed with even a little bit amount of water, can melt the rubber seal of something like that, and can really screw up the fuel system. Is that a problem associated with our car?

Anyways, 570km......thats still 170km more than what I'm getting now.

I'd defenetly be intertested in using acetone if it increased the gas milage that much. Why are you getting better results with a lower octane? I thought our car likes premium gas.

acetone supposedly has an octane rating of 140 or something like that, so I guess when it mixes with gasoline, it increases the octane somewhat. May be if you mix it with 94 octane premium gas with acetone, then the "actual" octane will be a bit too high and it might not combust as well? I don't know, just making a guess here.

If you are below 3rpm, you are not really revving anything. That is considered conservative driving.

by flooring it in sportshft mode or gate shifting, you can reach 7200rpm or the rev limiter. 4-5k in normal driving is possible if you step on the gas pedal further down...usually if you do that from a stop light, by the time you get up to speed, most cars will be way behind you. If you just wanna keep up with the traffic flow, then 1.5-2.5k is plenty enough.

I put in a de-Vtech controller to only allow me to rev to 1000rpm. I get about 600 miles on a tank. Vtec kicks in @ 469rpm. It's orgasmic.

You've got that right. Today was a beautiful day for a wash/wax/country drive...

Haha, true that. If only they made upgraded cams for the TL... that'd be hot. I hate Civic/RSX owners. It's not fair that they get all the good parts.

I'll take it to 6000+ every single time I drive it. Nice to gate shift and bounce it off at 7200, but I can't look for cops at the same time.

May still have hope for Honda yet to come out with some major changes for the TL. Of all things though I doubt it will be chain driven instead of using a timing belt, Honda even put a timing belt in their most expensive automobile, the NSX.

Has their been a modern Honda automobile with a timing chain as opposed to timing belt in recent years? I'm assuming you meant chain driven as in timing chain

they have been hounded for not using a chain by most publications for years. The rumor has it their new line of engines are supposed to be DOHC and chain. Weather or not its true?? hopefully we will see when the new TL comes out?
