How do you know if your Catylitic (sp) converter is bad?
My friend was showing me how to change my oil and I was telling him that when my car is warmed up, I hear a puffing noise coming from the bottom of my car. Sometimes it is quite loud and other times, it is faint. He said that it was coming from my CAT Converter and he didn't know if it was normal. Does anyone else experience the same problem? Thanks in advance.

a lot of times when the cat goes bad your exhaust will start to smell kinda rotten, usually your car wont run good (i.e. pluged cat) or like SilverUA5 said it might sound like something is loose inside

One sure sign is the check engine lite.If it illuminates and the codes produced by it indicate a catalyst with reduced efficiency then it is time to replace it.A rotten egg odor is not really an indication of a worn catalyst. All cars under hard acceleration can smell like this.If your vehicle smells continuously of rotten eggs under all drive modes you may have issues with an engine running rich .If your catalyst makes crackling noises after engine shutdown do not panic , it is not abnormal for the exhaust to make some noises during warmup or cooldown. It is simply a case of metal expanding and contracting .this in turn can make some surprisingly loud noises .If you however tap on your catalyst and is sounds like a rock is bouncing around inside then possibly the catalyst bed inside may have fractured requiring replacement. As far as running the car without catalysts, removal of a federally mandated piece of emissions control equipment is a federal offense. My brother nearly got nailed for it in his old Mustang. The car was equipped with 4 catalysts ,at 10.000 dollars per missing catalyst he quickly saw to it that the car was restored to spec.jens
damn that is so illegal here to have a straight through no cat.. and actually it is better to have a cat... even if its the high flow one... it will burn off ne excess gas that may get through...
