How do you copy a 1999 TL Key?

I lost one set of my keys somewhere. I want to get a duplicate spare key. How do I do this cheaply?

I see I can buy an aftermarket key on ebay for $20. But I imagine I need some electronic chip or something like that.

How do I do it cheaply. Or do I have to bite the bullet and go to the dealer?

I already know I can buy the remote keyless entry and program it myself.

Thanks!

you need to get a OEM key, because it has the immobilizer chip in it. get it on eBay and have it programmed and cut at the dealer to save some

As long as you have a key to copy I think it's like $40 a key. If they have to get an entirely new key I think it's around $90.

Damn, $40/$90 to make a copy of a key? Whats so special/different about TL keys? You cant just go to a hardware store and have them make a copy for you?

Acura keys have an immobilzer chip in them, that's what makes them so expensive. If you have a copy they can pull the code off the chip and cut and program a new key. If you don't have the key then they have to get it from the immobilizer unit. More work than just cutting all around.

Like 02TLSfan said, TL keys have a chip in them that has to be in there and give the immobilizer unit a signal for the car to start. You can't just get a blank and use that, unless you disable the immobilizer which will make the car easier to steal and in some cases, void the warranty. You must get the OEM key with the chip in it for it to work.
