How do you clean your windows?

I'm talking about the insides of your windows. No matter how hard I try I can't get them clean. I use ClearVu and wadded newspapers, but I guess I need to learn the proper technique.

It seems that the vinyl on my dash has been outgassing quite a bit. There's a haze that gets thicker every day! But now that I've applied Vinylex on all my vinyl the hazing has stopped. But I still have smears!

I also have trouble cleaning the dot matrix areas (always smearing) and of course reaching behind the 3rd brake light.

Any hints?

Hey Daveman.

I was watching Crank and Chrome a couple of weekends ago. It's a car show just in case you are wondering. Anyway they had a tip on cleaning the windows.

First of all, I would NOT do this on the window tint or the dot matrix area. OKAY!

There tip was to spay on a high quality window cleaner and thoroughly cover the window. Then take a 0000 or 00000 grade steel wool and wipe it down. Take good care not to scuff the trim with the steel wool. Then using a clean rag to wipe it clean.

Their point was as you stated, the "emissions" from the vinyl is difficult to clean.

As for me I haven't tried that yet. This processes sounds like it would be very good for the front windshield. Cut right through those bugs and stuff. But I'd leary of trying it anywhere else.

I've had fairly good results using Eagle One 20/20 Auto Glass Cleaner. It's ammonia free and supposed to be safe for tinted windows. It's formula claims to be good at removing that "vinyl fog" as they call it.

I have the same problem, especially on my back window but i just use clearview (because i have tint) and i found that if i do it on a day when its very cool out and the glass itself is on the cooler side it works much better....i grab two hands worth of paper towels....spray down the window real good, then use one bunch of paper towels to scrub the window, then use the other set to make sure you dry it very well with the new set of paper towels and that usually stops the streaks. the back window is hard especially arund the thrid breaklight. I have used a small wedge of wood (like the kind at a construction site) and wrapped the paper towels around the wood to reach that hard to reach spot....this is just my wacky procedure, but it works

I've heard of the steel wool trick, but I'm reluctant to try it...

ArN - I thought ClearVu doesn't contain ammonia and is safe on tint? What do you use?

I'm thinking of sliding a terry towel between the brake light and the glass... gonna try that this weekend.

I don't like using paper towels on windows because they tend to leave dust/particles behind.

I clean my windows, inside and out, with 2 miracle towels (those rubbery things for drying the car), one wet and one dry. I pretty much just wash with the wet one (using CLEAN cold water) and dry right away with the dry one, which prevents any streaking. I also wring out the wet one every other window or two. I don't use any cleaners or other products, although I suppose you can. I got this tip from that detailing forum and it works great, although you will need some kind of cleaner if you get poo on your windows or something.

just my 2 cents..
