The ashtray is part of the "shifter trim piece". You're going to have to remove the center console and shift console to get to the ash tray. Here's the instructions Tim made and posted in the FAQs... http://www.acura-tl.com/faq.htm#2c
Pull the fuse cover at the end of the dash on the drivers’ side, open the door to do this.
Remove the gold colored screw that holds on the trim panel that runs under the steering wheel. Then remove the trim panel, it should just pull down at an angle to unclip.
Open the storage compartment in the center console and remove the two wood trim pieces. Start at the end near the storage compartment and lift up on the trim piece and it will start to unclip. Once the end unclips pull it up and towards the rear of the car and it should come out. Repeat for the other side.
Remove the little piece of black carpet in the bottom of the storage compartment and then remove the two gold colored screws.
There will be four gold colored screws where the two pieces of the center console meet. Remove the two that are towards the rear of the car.
You should now be able to remove the rear section of the center console, be sure to unplug the power wire for the 12volt accessory plug. This plug will be found where the two pieces meet.
Now remove the side of the console on the drivers’ side. There are four screws that hold this piece on as well as two clips.
Remove the three screws located along the top and then there is one screw under the dash. After the four screws are removed pull the rear of this trim piece towards the drivers’ door to unclip it then remove it from the car.
The passenger side of the center console will remove in the same manner as the driver’s side. The only difference is there are only three screws along the top that hold it on.
Next we move on to removing the trim around the shifter. This will get its own set of instructions because it was a PITA.
Remove the little black piece of trim the goes around the shifter gate (the silver part with the letters and numbers). This is done by pulling straight up on it.
Remove the two buttons for the heated seats. They will pull straight up to get them out and then you need to unplug the connector from the bottom of the switch. It helps if you put the car in gear, preferably 1-2. Make sure you set the e-brake to keep the car from rolling (it will roll). You don’t need to start the car to do this, just push the brake and turn the key to the accessory position.
Once you have the heated seat buttons out you can remove the trim piece they were in. Pull up on the rear section and once it is loose pull the piece towards the rear of the car and it will come out.
You will see two screws next to a centronics type connector, one on each side. Remove these two screws.
There should be two screws where the shifter trim piece meets the face of the radio, remove these. Then look on the back of the trim about a half inch below the two screw you just removed and take out those screws as well.
There should be six screws total and then the shifter trim piece should lift out. Be sure to unplug the power connector for the cigarette lighter/accessory power connector.
