Hood lock VS. thief !!!!

I wonder if our TLs are easy for thieves to open the hood without breaking your windows and pull the hood open latch I know on some cars it's easy to open the hood by putting your hand under the front bumper and pull the cable to release the hood. Thieves can do it that way and just disconnect your power cable , the alarm won't sound and they can go in your car and take your stuff. Have anybody ever had that issue ? I'm getting a alarm and still debating between either a hood lock or back up siren with built in battery.

The only thing alarms do is slow thieves down IMO. If you want more protection, get a back up battery and siren. Have the battery and siren installed INSIDE the car somewhere. For further protection you can get a murcery switch to detect if the car is getting jacked up or pulled onto a flatbed.

Unless your car is already on an incline (like hills in SF).

If you have an expensive audio system or lots of mods on your car, I strongly suggest a hoodlock AND a backup siren with built in battery. I can tell you from experience that my hoodlock protected my competition system (approx. $10,000 in parts alone, not including labor) from being stolen...back in 1995, I came out of the library, and I noticed 4 guys hanging around my Camry. They quickly got into their Mustang and took off. When I got to my car, I noticed that they cut my front grille and tried to pop the hood. But with the hoodlock in place, they couldn't do squat. With my alarm blaring, they didn't hang around for very long. I had the following security features protecting my car:

Alpine alarm, arming buzzer, shock sensor, glass sensor, pager, hoodlock, hood and trunk pin switches, 2 alarms under the wheelwell (hidden behind the wheelwell cover), 1 backup siren with built in battery, 2 pain generators (piezzos).

The only way my car could be taken was if they towed it. GPS tracking was not available at the time, and I would have gotten it if it was available. Anyways, the more layers of security you add to your security system, the safer your car will be. Thieves will find it not worth their while to tamper with such a hard to break into vehicle. Hope this info helps.

I had a Chapman hood lock on many of my previous cars, but my local stereo/alarm place said Chapman went out of business because there is no room to install one on todays cars. I was interested in one for my TL due to the headlight theft problem but they said there is no place to put it Anyway, the TL s I have seen with headlights stolen never had the hood opened. They had a cut in the hood above each light and the bumper cover ripped from both sides. :fingerfawk: thieves!

In this case, a proximity sensor and/or a shock sensor would be required to prevent HID theft.

best bet is a good security system. Even with the hoodlock, if they want the headlights, they will pry it with a crowbar anyway. What part of TX u at? I havent heard of anyone in TX lose headlights yet..

A siren in the car is ok. But this is much better! No one can tolerate the sound this thing makes!

I think i'll go for the back up siren with built-in battery ( I'm getting Clifford MAtriX RX3.5). It's only take 5sec for thieves to brake your window , pull the hood latch, open the hood and cut the baterry power cable. Yes the alarm will sound but 5 sec doesn't seem to be enough. nobody will seem to call the police also we get false alarm all the time don't we? No power , all the sensor won't work :thief: .But if you have the back-up siren with biult-in power It'll sound and they won't be around for long .

Most quality alarms will adjust for such a situation. They set themselves when you arm the alarm so whatever angle the car is in it considered 0. Any deviation from 0 and the alarms sounds.

I've seen one with a custom pepper spray system that could route the spray to a nossle integrated into the top of the the driver door or the passanger one
:P

if you had a nice enough system, you could trigger it to hit the brown note

Thanks for the link. But I was actually trying to find out if anyone knows or has installed one of those hoodlocks that automatically locks the hood on a 99-03 TL when you arm the car and unlocks it when you disarm. I have heard rumors of how our cars don't have room to install one. Just curious if anyone knows a namebrand and model that will work with our car. I know DEI carries one, I just don't know if it will work. Thanks in advance to everyone and thanks again ABBOUSHI

I dont think automatically controlled hoodlocks will be a good idea. If you have a dead battery. You are screwed. Unless your battery is located somewhere else. Besides inside the hood.

Hmmm wouldn't your alarm sound when your hood is released anyways? I know my alarm is not the only alarm system that has a hood sensor as well as shock sensors. But to be perfectly honest, if an experienced and good theif wants your car, he's going to get it somehow. Its like they become McGyver or something...

Thats a very good point, I wonder if any of the manufacturers of hoodlocks have some kind of fail safe feature.

Very true, if a really good thief wants to get into your car he'll get in it... I'm just trying to find extra accessories/sensors that hopefully will deter them away and look for another car. My alarm will go off if the hood is opened, but it only takes 10 seconds to disconnect the battery or clip the siren. The only two options i know to make this harder for thieves is to install a hood lock of somesort or install a backup battery so the alarm will continue to go off (if the car battery is disconnected).
B\c really, if you don't have atleast a backup battery your alarm is not working to its full potential. So if any of you have an alarm installed, atleast try to get a backup battery and a couple of sirens. These aren't much. Thanks for your input.
