History behind the Window Trim "Tape"

Interesting find:

3M Info

To quote: "Honda has used 3M blackout films at its Marysville, Ohio, plant since 1999 for the sash application on the Acura TL. Equipment co-developed by 3M and Honda allows operators to apply a high-gloss film to all four door window sashes. The material is die-cut to size by 3M and backed by a release liner. Honda also uses 3M blackout films on its Accord wagons built in Japan and for sashes on the Civic Globally, including Swindon, UK.

Blackout film offers additional advantages over paint, adds Mukund Prajapati, 3M business development manager for Functional and Protective Films. "If flaws are detected on a painted sash, rework usually means running the entire car body through the paint booth again," he says. Pulling it off and applying a new piece can easily correct imperfections noticed while applying a film.

Compared to paint, film eliminates the labour and material waste associated with foil pre-masking and de-masking. The blackout films even "recover" from small dents by smoothing themselves over time when exposed to warm temperatures."

If only they knew how much grief their magic film has caused TL owners throughout the years!!!!
