Unhappy HELP.. rounded off bolt

i was trying to change my oil for the first time on my tl today after 10k.. i used to get the little oil shops to change it quickly but today i decided to do it myself after putting some seafoam in it..
i didnt have a proper jack the one i had was messed up and wouldnt lift the car high enough thats why i couldnt fully get under the car so i had to really reach my arm under in there
so everytime i would try to get that bolt off.. the wrench would slowly slide off.. that bolt was pretty much stuck in there...i think that must have made the edges of the bolt round off.. i used a 17 mm socket by the way..
i know its a pretty dumbass mistake i made but i need some help now in how i might be able to get this rounded bolt off without taking it to a repairman i also tried using vicegrips after it got rounded but that made it worse

I was going to say visegrips but looks like you already tried. I would try again with the biggest ones you can find. Tighten it up as much as humanly possible onto the drain bolt and pull! If that doesn't work you may have to get it on a lift or really high on some jack stands and drill a hole in the middle of it and use an easy-out to get it off.

17mm 12point socket and some epoxy to glue it on let it cure over night and give it a shot, you can also cut lines into the rounded hex head in order to give the epoxy more surface area to grip on.

Make sure you have a crush gasket waiting to put on when you put the new drain bolt in too

If a good set of visegrips wont get it- go to a shop
needs more leverage!
This is a common prob with speedieshops- drain plug way past 29 foot pounds torque
Hope the threads in the pan are not damaged- they can get pulled right out!!

Not sure what socket you used but if its a 12 point get rid of it. Find a 6 point for future uses. Get a set of ramps or a better jack to lift the car properly, and a set of jack stands for safety.

Only use shallow 6 point sockets, if not a 6 point closed end wrench any time your working with drain plugs

Go to your local home improvement store and buy a set of these.

Irwin Industrial Tools 394001 Bolt-Grip Bolt Extractor Base Set, 5-Piece

I believe they make a metric and standard set.

I've used Sears version of those (although not on a drain bolt) & they worked well. Use the one that fits the tightest. It's worth a try.

x2 on the turbo socket

I've used a large pipe wrench in such situations. You might even be able to rent one if you don't have one.

This is what I've done, even tho this is on a drain plug,it shouldn't mess up anything.

Use a flat head screwdriver towards the side of the bolt and give it a few good hits (just make sure you're going in the correct direction).

This should break the bolt lose enough where you'll then be able to use vise grips to get it off. I've done this before and worked every time, hope it helps.

This happened to a buddy of mine the first time he did his own oil change on his 06 Monte Carlo. A pair of vice grips were able to do the job for me. G/L with getting it off.

he said it was the damn speedy oil change people that mustve used a impact gun to tighten the bolt right on

So you couldnt get it off with a vise grips or a wrench but your mechanic could put a socket on it and use a impact gun to get it off??????

I don't know about the problem being caused by a quicky lube shop.

you gotta make a quick and powerful turn or it'll round the bolt head.

If the wrench or socket is on correctly and you are using a 6 point (or 12 point) you could slowly apply pressure and it wont round the bolt off.
