has anyone done the navi conversion with a aftermarket head unit? i'm lost and need a little help if anyone has any info about all the connections that connect to the audio plug (pins #A4, A11, A12, A13, A14).... can these be bypassed?

 

i'm not the best electronic guy savy so i figured someone may know or can help PLEASE...

if you have an aftermarket headunit, these pins are already bypassed on the harness that connects to the factory plug behind the headunit.

In order to keep the navigation prompts you need to run the correct wires from the back of the dvd unit. There is a diy here

personally i haven't gotten this to work, and so i did it differently using the basic concept but i was getting too much feedback in my amps to keep it, but that might be releated to my amps pretty much on their way out, they are about 8 yrs old now.

 

The factory plug behind the headunit also doesn't have the same pins listed. so do i have to add these wires to the factory plug/harness? and from there where do the go (into the head unit and to where ever they lead into the factory harness?

i can't check that thread... my work filters it out.

 

How exactly are you doing the navi conversion? Did you make your own wiring harness?

 

I'm just starting the conversion and got sent both complete harnesses (dash and rear) but missing the audio harness/plug to the dvd screen harness/plug.... but i found a plug that i could reuse for the dvd screen that was missing so basically i have everything.

I reused as much as i could from the harnesses that was sent and will be making a new harness for the front. the only thing im stuck at is that the pins listed above cuz i'm using a after market headunit. i figured that i could just tap into the factory harness... but when i looked at it, the same pins are missing from the the factory plug and that i don' tknow if these pins can be rerouted/bypass the audio plug. aslo i got a PnP harness made by Uncald4 and the same pins are missing.

 

i know i can wire the wires from the DVD-ROM up to the audio harness but then from the audio harness where do they go into the headunit? or can these be bypassed or tapped to something else?

 

also another question... according the the wiring diagram what does those dash lines mean? when looking at the same wires from the DVD-Rom to the audio harness the purple from B2 is dashed with B1, B9, B10 and go into the audio harness A11, A12, and A13. does this mean that B2 is spliced into B1, B9, B10?

 

the dashed lines are shield wires.

Those audio wires will not go into your aftermarket headunit, nor anywhere else. They are specific and unique to the oem headunit in order to work with the oem navigation. All those wires do is provide the navi voice prompts to be heard over the factory speakers. If you want to be able to do this with an after-market headunit u need to follow the directions in that DIY i posted above.

If the dashed lines are to be shielded, y is it that B2 from the DVD-Rom plug show that's it's shielded with B1, B9, B10 and then doesn't connect to anything on the other end but is shielded around and up to A11, A12, A13?

 

B2 goes to ground. You can buy shielded wire. Say you buy a 4 conductor wire that is shielded you will get 4 wires going through the cable and the 5th wire will be the shield wire, usually bare copper. Since b1,b9 and b10 are just audio signal wires the shield just needs to be grounded like it shows. Other wire groups like the RGB signals from the dvd unit to the screen are shielded between each other by actually pins on each ones respective connector.

 

Well that link doesn't help, it's still wants me to tap into pins A13 and A14 which i don't have a wire in the harness to tap into... what do i do now?

 

run your own wires. If u got sent the full harness for the dvd unit, the corresponding wires will be in that harness. Then u can run them wherever you want them to go. Basicly what i did, since i have amps in my trunk, is just did all the audio switching described in that link in the trunk also. That way i only had to run short wires from the dvd unit to the switching unit described in that diy. So if the harness u have for the dvd unit in the trunk is the full harness just find the Mute Wire (B3), Left audio(B9), Right Audio(B1), Audio Ground(B10) wires and then follow that diy according to how u have your aftermarket audio system setup.

 

According to the DIY the resistor Prong#3 is connected to Mute Wire (B3) and then spliced into A14 <---- pin A14 is missing on the harness also pin A13 for Right Audio(B1)... there's no wires for me to splice into... and the harness for the head unit also doesn't have these wires

Right, i know they aren't there. But they originate on the back of the DVD Navigation UNit in the trunk. So if you have the full harness (Connector B) on the back of the DVD Nav Unit, it will have all the wires u need to do the DIY. Basically stop looking at the radio harness. I gave u the list of wires u need on the back of the B connector on the back of the dvd nav unit.

 

I got that and understand that but on the DIY it specifically tells me to splice into pins A13 & A14.....

"Take the positive wires and splice them into the Black/White (pin 13) wire of the wire harness" there's no wire in pin13 on the harness for me to splice into though...

.... hmmmm.... well could you tell me if this is right?

yes i'm trying to tell u they are the same wires. Except only B3 goes tot he resistor. The audio wires, B1, B9, B10 u just attached to an RCA cable and then plug that into the rca jacks on the mpss.

The easiest place to connect C5 from the navi unit, is right in your trunk. Next to the left taillight you will see a random connector which is the trailer hitch connector, as seen here
