Help with Motor Mounts

Well, I new it was too good to be true.my '02 3.2TL which has 105,000 on it and what I thought was minor cosmetic damage, apparently has two broken motor mounts. At least thats what I'm being told by my local Good Year garage. Just brought it in for a quickie oil change as its too cold outside to do it myself, but I'm wondering if anyone out here can give me an idea on what that would run me cost wise with a normal mechanic. I say normal because I don't trust the guys here.places like this offer inexpensive oil changes just so they can get your car in and diagnose it. They always find something that needs to be done. That's how they generate revenue. My regular mechanic is on vacation, so I'll have him look at it when he gets back, but I was going someone in the forums could offer some advice based on their own experience. Any info would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks! !!

Front and Rear mounts are not going to make it to 105,000 miles. Front mount is pretty easy to change out, the rear is a bit of a pain.

Yeah, the front and passenger side top motor mounts are usually toasted before 100k, they will cost less than $150 for parts and are not all that difficult to replace.

But, if unable to DIY....figure about at least $100+ for replacing them at an honest local mechanic. The rear mount is near $100 and will be considerably more difficult to replace, another $100+ for labor at best.

If ya go to the wrong place, the retail price of these 3 mounts along with labor involved could easily top well over $500. So, if you can get the front and side done yourself, you'll be ahead of the game. Try Rockauto.com for good prices on these parts.

The front and side mounts are so easy, that it would be a crime to pay someone to do it. Each take 30-45 min to complete. If you can use a ratchet, you can change them. Search for our diy in here. Save your money for the rear mount. I bought all 3 mounts for $150 from those ebay kits. They are oem copies with vacuum assit. I installed them myself and the difference in ride quality and acceleration was like night and day. This is the best bang for the buck considering the age of the vehicle.

Wow. I can handle a wrachet, but I'll have to take a look at the DIY posts. At least I have an honest mechanic. Though he is sympathetic to my financial position, don't garages usually have a standard 50% markup on parts? I'd it ride to offer to buy my own parts? Or do I politely easy the extra $100 by having him order and replace them? Maybe I can just mention that I saw the parts listed for X amount, but let him get the parts as well.

replacing my rear mount required lots of cussing to get the job done.

It wouldn't be so bad if you didn't have lay on top and reach around....

....the engine of course.

I guess I'll just have to bite the bulleton this one. As excited as i am to have just bought this car last week and do all these great things to the car, I'm just not that technically inclined. A minor tune up will be an adventure for me, I don't think I could handle the mounts. I appreciate all the feedback! Jeez, in having Tribble just adjusting the headlights to aim higher, I couldn't handle a Mount! Just got my owners manual today and the service manual is due Monday.illb stick withb simple fluid changes for now. Read up a bit before I really cause some damage. Lol

Give it a second thought, read the DIY's and look at the actual positioning of the front and top passenger side mounts. They really are not too bad to access. Try the top one first, as it's the easiest.

Buy all three mounts, do the front and side yourself, then pay your mechanic for the rear one. But, if uncomfortable....ask your mechanic if you can bring in your own parts to save some money on the job.

You never know till you try. It's just bolts and nuts and finding how to reach them to make them turn. Don't get discouraged because its tough to do. That's what's satisfying about DIy. You know it was done right cause you were there. I messed up installing my rear mount cause it was 2 pieces. I installed the lower half alone an had to take everything back apart to assemble then reinstall it. Just go slow and steady.

I agree with everyone else's comments, front and side are a definite DIY, the rear, I might find a garage. I typically buy the parts and then phone shop around for the install price. You'd be surprised at the difference in prices.

There's a simple test to check if the mounts are bad. Open the hood, put the car in drive and while holding the brakes on, give it a little gas in pulses and watch the top of the engine. If it moves back on forth more than 1-2 inches, then you need to replace the mounts, if it also makes a thumping noise, then they're really shot !

Good luck !

If you want a mount set that will last much longer than OE but is performance-oriented check out our XLR8 motor mounts.

I got this 5 mount kit...3 engine + 2 tranny. I installed all 5 pieces. Was a very easy job. In fact, the price has dropped. I paid $150 for it 1.5 yrs ago. It's sold by many vendors under different distributor labels, but it's the exact same parts. This kit will give you the oem feel. If you want performance, go with excellerate kit.

I AGREE 100%....very easy!
I do these engine mount installs as a side job in Toronto after I did mine for the first time. It now takes me approx 45 min to do the rear mount. One guy was able to do this quicker without removing the mount bracket by merely undoing all mounts and lifting the engine to clear off the bracket. I haven't tried that cause I don't have 2 jacks and it sounds a bit risky to me.

Here's my detailed instructions on how to do the rear mount step by step:

This one is no harder than the front. Its just in a different location as that you cant just stand in front of it. You have to lay under the car as well.

Why would you need 2 jacks? If you are using the jack to hold the car up You shouldnt be under the car. Its not risky. Just place a block of wood between the jack and the oil pan and slowly lift the engine (with the engine mount bolt removed) and it will raise up slightly enough to get the mount out from under it.

It isnt any harder. What makes it more difficult? The fact you have to lay on your back under the car? What gets in the way? There is nothing blocking it or that you have to remove to get to it. Only thing that is there is the header (which i recommend you do this BEFORE you drive the car anywhere) but there is plenty of room to work around it. Get yourself a blanket, fold it up some and lay it across the engine and lay on it. All the bolts for the rear mount with a few extensions (i recommend a swivel and 2 12" 1/2" socket extensions and every thing can be done from up top (as far as removing the bolts) then use your jack to lift up the engine (also helps to remove the side mount bolt to allow the motor to move more) slightly and move the mount out of the way and out.

Well now that ya made it seem simpler to do, more of us will attempt to try your technique. Put the procedure in the DIY's with the other motor mount replacement threads. Thanks for sharing these tips !!!!

Also while your removing things, remove the 2 stupid NVH dampers sitting next to it (2 square heavy things) they will give you more space and they arent needed. Never noticed anything different from having them removed.

I wondered WTF those 2 square things were-it just looks like they don't do anything.
Is that also what that rubber piece on the little metal arm is that goes on the passenger side mount-I could not see what that thing could possibly do??

The only bolt that was really hard for me was the mount-to-frame bolt on the passenger side rear that is under the heater hoses & valve-it is hard to get a socket on it

Vacuum assisted hydraulic motor mounts along with special dampening devices are all part of Acura's advanced technological engineering efforts, or so they claim !!!!

So if I bolt some more rubber blocks all over it, maybe it won't make any noise at all
