HELP!!! (*#&ing Oil Filter

I'm doing my first oil change today and I can not for the life of me remove the old oil filter. Does anyone have any tips? I even have the K&N with the 1" nut welded on to help remove it, but the last person who did my oil change must've tightened it so hard that the nut rounded off when I tried to remove the filter. Any tips and suggestions are appreciated!

try to use some oil filter pliers. thats what i use when i cant get it off other ppls cars. and when u put it back on dont make it super tight, you can break/crack the rubber o ring. put it on snug by hand and another 1/4 - 1/2 turn

take a flat head screw driver, and stab it through the filter...then break it loose.

or

take some large adjustable plier's and grab it and break it loose.

are you sure your trying to turn it the right way? you did say it was your first oil change.

lefty loosey, righty tighty.

I would try the pliers first.
also, you might want to remove the passenger front wheel. from the wheel well, it'll give you a lot more leverage to break it loose, and less awkward arm maneuvers

same thing happened to me when i first got my car.

That's what I ended up doing....what a process...

But now I know what to do in the future in the worst case scenario! Gotta look at the positive side of things. I'll look into these:

I did that too, the only thing that worked was the screwdriver technique. And I didn't have another way to get to a parts store to get the filter wrench.

you dont need a filter wrench...plies or a screw driver will do it everytime, dont waste money on tools you dont need.

It's like $3 and saves you having to clean up a mess if you stab the filter with a screwdriver

I have one like this.. works like a charm

just use the K&N with the correct tightness- then next time wont be an issue
Lube the oring and threads with new oil- prefill the filter about 3/4 full before install

Frams have that black textured part at the end to aid grip. Used the old screwdriver technique (awfully messy) numerous times myself in the past when some gorilla had put it on before. They also make filter "wrenches" made specifically to fit specific sizes of filters w/ wrench flats or square drives for ratchets/extensions.

Just be glad we have an easy to access filter. My wife's Lexus is a PITA -- access it from above, impossible to get any wrench, pliers etc in there, burn my forearm every time it touches the engine, and then the damn thing is installed upisde down so oil drains down onto everything until I can flip the filter right side up, burning my forearm a few more times in the process. I love my Acura!

I never need to do that. if you are concern, just start the car after after you are done with the oil change since oil is still on the top for lubrication.

It doesn't hurt, and oil pressure comes up a lot sooner than with a dry filter.

while most are afraid of the dry start up there is MORE than enough lubrication left on all vital parts that its not needed. Does it hurt to do, No. Will it hurt your motor not to do it, No.
