Hey guyz I have a 2000 TL, My problem is my headlights. when i turn them on they stay on 4 like 20-30sec and goes off!!! Can some one plz help? Ask a mech. they said i should change the whole factory hid kit which will run me like 400 and change a piece. Help

 

Both headlights? How the does the color of the light look, is it normal or tinted redish or something like that?

It could be the system that turns off your headlights when ur not driving. I say take a multimeter and measure the power before the headlight module (or tell the shop to do so).

If they always go on and then go off like that It doesnt seem like ur ballasts are bad, but hey who knows?

 

or you could have them retro fitted with projectors and blacked out

 

^ What the hell will that accomplish. He said his light are going out, and you suggest to retro fit projectors. Maybe you should get some sleep.

Get somebody with a TL and swap out every piece to find the problem. Start with the bulbs, then igniter then ballast. Better to find out first before you go and spend money, or do something that wont help like retro fit projectors.

 

I would suspect the ballast~ sorry not dave!
if they light- the ignitor is ok, but if they wont stay running.....
On big parking lot lights which are HID, the ballast go out all the time.

You say they both go on for 30 seconds then turn off and nothing- wont work at all?
- wait 10 minutes and they work?- what.....??? are they full brightness when they come on?
need more input to give better answer to you

An auto electrical shop would be better than a general repair shop if you need pro help on this fix

I would also suspect that ballasts, but two at the same time? I think the possibility of that is pretty slim. Like i said before if you test the power going to the ballast, and you see that their getting juice then you know its the ballast, if their not getting power then its something else.

I've seen ballasts behave erratically but two turning on and off at the same time doesnt really sound like bad ballasts.

You cant really use aftermarket stuff cuz our ballasts screw in on the bottom to the headlight, if you remove it you'll have a hole there and water will come in. you could try to seal it up but thats pretty tricky and you might wind up ruining two more ballasts.

 

I am going on the worst case scenario- assuming the car has been repeatedly subject to pressure washing- drive thru or quarter car wash- ang got water in the housings which then drips down onto the exposed ballast and !!!!

Checking fuses and relays is the place to start when a big failure happens-
